Be it known that I, SAMUEL SoHwAR'rz, a citizen of the United States, residing at 1A4. /Vashington Avenue, Albany, in the county of Albany and State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Improve ment in Collars, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to a new and improved form of collar.

One of the objects of my invention is to provide a collar which shall not require any starching but which shall have substantially the appearance of a stiff or starched collar.

Another object of my invention is to provide a soft collar of a novel and improved construction, so that it can be quickly and economically manufactured and will not wilt in hot weather.

Another object of my invention is to devise certain improvements for the structure illustrated in my previously filed application Serial No. 525,294, filed December 28th, 1921 in the United States Patent Oflice.

Other objects of my invention will be set forth in the following description and drawings which illustrate a preferred embodiment thereof.

Figure 1 is a perspective view illustrating my new collar.

Figure 4: shows the blank from which 'the body of the collar is made.

Figure 5 shows the blank from which the facing strips for the neck band of the collar are made. v

According to my invention a blank is first cut from heavy material having the general shape or contour shown in Figure 4. This blank has a fold over top portion 1 and a neck band 2 having extensions or tabs in which the front button holes 1 are formed. The rear button hole 3 is, of course, formed in the center of the neck band 2.

The fold over top portion 1 has the edge portions 5, 6 and 7 formed thereon and these are first turned under and stitched by means of the stitching 8 as clearly shown in F igur 2. This provides a neat reinforced edge around the three sides of the fold over top portion. The neck band 2 can have the tabs thereof stiffened by means of pieces of fabric 11 which are sewed thereto by means of the stitching 10. Two facing strips 14: are now folded over so as to provide the doubled-over portion 16 around the four edges thereof, and placed upon the neck band 2. The two facing strips, 14 and the tabs 11 are now united by the stitching 9 as clearly shown in Figures 2 and 3. It is not necessary by reason of this construction to double over the edges of the neck band 2, and these edges can be left unturned or of a single thickness, and this produces a marked economy in manufacture because it is much easier to double over the edges of the facing strips 14 which are thinner than the neck band and sew these doubled-over edges in position if so desired. By reason of this construction, a stiff neck band is provided having neat edges without the necessity for doubling over the edges of the said neckband.

I have described a preferred embodiment of my invention but it is clear that numerous changes and omissions may be made without departing from its spirit.

I have illustrated the neckband as being integral with the fold-over top, but my invention and the claims are not limited to this detail.

I claim z 1. A collan comprising a fold over top, and a neckband made of relatively heavy material and continuous with said fold over top, the said neckband having its edges un turned and of a single thickness, said neckband also having a relatively thin facing strip provided with turned under edges sewed thereto and covering said unturned edges.

2. A collar comprising a fold over top, and a neckband made of relatively heavy material and continuous with said fold over top, the said neckband having its edges unturned and of a single thickness, each side of. said neckband having a relatively thin facing strip provided with turned under edges sewed thereto and covering said unturned edges.
