Description
' UNITED STATES PATENT OEEICE` THOMAS KEEOH, OF NEW YORK, N.Y.v
IMPROVEMENT IN HAVERSACKS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 40,047, dated September 22, 1863.
To all whom it may concerm A Be itknown that I, THOMAS KEECH, of New York, of the county of NewYork, in the State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improved Haversack; and l do hereby declare that the following is a tull and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specification.
My invention relates particularly tov that kind of haversack which is made of duck or other textile material, which is pervious to moisture, and which can be readily washed.
This kind of haversack possesses very many 'and great advantages for army use; but experience has shown that one of its great disadvantages arises from its pervious nature, which admits grease or moisture from any article or material contained in the haversack to penetrate through it and grease or stain the clothes of the person wearing or carrying the bag. A haversack made entirely ot some impervious material would overcome this objection or disadvantage; but such kind of haversack would not possess many real ad. vantages possessed by the haversack made of pervious material, such as duck, which is light, cheap, and admits of being washed and kept clean and nice. To render this kind of haversack perfectly desirable in every respect, and free it of the objection now attached to it, is the object'of my present inventon, which to this end consists in the employment, in connection with a haversack made of pervious or penetrable material, of a detachable or removable side piece or pad of impervious or impenetrable material, the whole so arranged as that the clothes of the person wearing the haversack will be effectually protected from any grease or moisture from the contents of the bag, all as hereinafter more fully described.
To enable those skilled in the art to make and use my invention,I will proceed to describe the construction or formation of one of my improved haversacks, referring by letters to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a perspective view of my improved yhaversack, and Fig. 2 is a cross-section at the line y y, Fig. 1.
In the several figures the same letter of reference indicates the same part of the article.
A is abag, made of duck or other pervious material in the usual manner, (of one piece so cut and sewed up as to form the bag and flap or cover 60,) and provided with a strap, B, of the same material, sewed or otherwise attached at either end to said bag A. This much of the haversack is now in use and well known, so that I need not here speak more particularly ci' it. On that side ofthe bag A which is worn neXtIto the person I sew four (more or less) buttons, c c c c, arranged or placed near the corners of the bag, by means of which I attach to said bag A a piece or sheet of enameled cloth, G, provided with suitable button-holes to receive the buttons c c, &c., and of a superficial size about or nearly equal to that of the whole side of the bag A.
It will be understood that by the employment of this detachable side piece,'O, the clothes of the person wearing the haversack are completely protected from any grease or moisture which (from the contents of bag A) penetrates the material of the bag A, and thus a haversack made of pervious material and possessing all the advantages of such kind of bag over one made of rubber or enameled cloth, or other impervious material, is possessed also, by the addition of the impervious side piece, C, ofthe great advantage of imperviousness on the side which comes in contact with the clothes of the person wearing the haversack.
It will be understood that in lieu of attaching the cloth G on the exterior of the bags side it may be attached on its interior and eect the same ends; and it will also be understood that any other convenient or desirable method of attaching the impervious pad C (other than that shown) will answer the purposes of carrying out my invention.
I do not wish to limit myself to the particular material shown and described, nor to the form and proportions of the parts of the haversaok; but,
Having expiained fully my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure byLetters Patent, is-
A haversaek formed of pervious material, and having a detachable impervious or mpenetrable side piece, the Whole arranged to operate substantialiy as described,l for the purposes set forth. l
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand this 14th day of August, 1863.
THOMAS KEECH.
