ARTHUR H. GAGE, orMnLRosE, MASSACHUSETTS.
APRON.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ARTHUR H. GAGE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Melrose, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented new and useful improvements in Aprons, of which the following is a specification. l
This invention relates to improvements in aprons.
The invention is especially adapted to be used in dairies where heavy and wet objects, such as large milk cans and cakes of ice, are handled, or, in fact, in any place where the operatives handle heavy objects which are grasped in the arms and which tend to wear out the apron or other protector used.
Aprons used in dairies and under the circumstances above are large and are made of heavy, tough material which is generally \vaterproofed. Such aprons are of necessity comparatively expensive. It has been demonstrated by experience that in the use of such aprons in dairies and the like the prin cipal wear comes upon that port-ion of the apron which is over the chest of the wearer,
for the objects carried are held in the arms of the wearer of the apron and against the chest of the wearer, thus causing wear and abrasion at the particular pointabove noted. Experience has shown that that portion of the apron over the chest of the wearer may become so worn out as to render the apron.
practically useless while the remaining portion of the apron is in good condition, thus necessitating the discarding of the apron when only a small portion of it is worn.
My invention has for its object the provision of an apron composed of two parts and so made that the above diflioulty will be done away with and the apron may be worn and will be good for the purpose for which it is intended until the whole apron is worn out.
Another object of my invention is to provide an apron of the class immediately above described which shall be simple in design and cheap in construction costing but little more to manufacture than the apron of the ordinary type.
The invention consists in the combination and arrangement of parts set forth in the following specification and particularly pointed out in the claim thereof.
Referring to the drawings: Figure 1 is a front view of the body portion'of my im-= proved apron. Fig. 2 is a front view of the Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed November 21, 1913.

protector portion of my improved apron. 1g. 3 is a front View of my complete apron showing the body portion and the protector portion assembled as in use.
Like numerals refer to like parts throughout the several views of the drawings.
In the drawings, 10 is the body portion of my apron which comprises a neck portion 11 and a skirt 12. The neck portion 11 is so formed as to fit around the neck and under the arms of the wearer. It is provided with suitable straps 13 and buckles 14c to enable the apron to be held firmly in position on the wearer. Attached to the neck-piece 11 is the skirt 12 which extends downwardly from the neck-piece when the apron is in. position on the wearer and along the front of the body of the wearer.
In the preferred form of my apron the neck-piece 11 is provided with perforations 15 which extend in a straight line across the bottom part of the neck portion. In these perforations are preferably secured eyelets 16. The perforations 15 extend entirely through the neck portion 11 and where the skirt '12 is attached to the neck portion 11 the perforations extend through both the neck portion 11 and the skirt portion 12. The protector portion 17 is provided on at east two of its sides with perforations 18 into which are set eyelets 19.
In the preferred form of my invention the apron is assembled by placing the protector portion 17 over the body portion 10, so that the perforations 18 in the protector portion 17 will aline with the perforations 16 in the neck portion 11. A lacing cord 20 (shown in Fig. 3) is then passed through the perforations in the protector portion 17 and the body portion 10, firmly securing them together, as shown in said Fig. 3.
In use the upper part of the protector portion 17 will be the first portion of the apron to wear out, for the reason that the heavy objects carried by the wearer of the apron cause particular abrasion and wear at this point. hen the upper part of the protector portion 17 has become thus worn the lacing cord QO-can be removed and the pro tector portion inverted, thus bringing the worn portion at the bottom of the apron and bringing the unworn portionon the chest of the wearer.
In the drawings, 1 have shown perfora tions in the protector portion only at the bottom and top thereof. Of course it is pos sible to provide similar perforations on the other two sides, thus making possible two other inversions of the protector portion 01' the apron.
lVhile in the prefered form of my invention I have shown the protector portion secured to the body portion by a lacing cord, I do not wish to be limited to this mode of attachment, as it is obvious that snap hooks, buttons and button-holes could be used for the same purpose.
The skirt 12 is not necessary to my improved apron, but it is desirable for the reason that the protector portion 17 may become Worn through and such Wear may not at once he noticed. The skirt 12 then serves to protect the wearer until the protector portion 17 can be reversed.
Having thus described my invention, What I claim and desire by Letters Patent to se cure is:
An apron comprising in combination a body portion, means to attach said body portion to the wearer of said apron, said body portion having a series of perforations therein, a protector portion having a plurality of sides, a plurality of said sides being provided With a series of perforations, each of the last mentioned series of perforations being adapted to cooperate With the perforations in said body portion, and a lacing cord adapted to pass through said perforations in said body portion and in said protector portion and to secure a plurality of the several sides of said protector portion, one side at a time, to said body portion.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto setv my mud in presence of tWo subscribing \vitnesses.
