SUSPENDERS.

SPECIFICATIONforming part of Letters Patent No. 372,051, dated October 25, 1887.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, SEWALL TRUAX, of 'IruaX Landing, in the county of Gareld, and in the Territory of Washington, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Suspenders; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 shows a view-of a pair of suspenders made in accordance with my invention; Fig. 2, a detail view of another form of the detachable connection between the shoulderstraps and the button-hole straps for the back buttons; and Fig. 3, a similar view showing a modied form of piece or connection for engaging the back buttons.

Ihe object of my invention is to provide an improvement in Suspenders; and to this end my invention consists in the Suspenders and in the construction, arrangement, and combination of the parts thereof, as hereinafter specied.

With Suspenders as heretofore made and used it has usually been. necessary, when the trousers are let down, to unbutton the two straps or tongues forming the suspender-end at the back, and detach them from the two back buttons on the trousers. Both straps had then to be buttoned onto the buttons again, all of which is inconvenient and takes both time and patience. Where the back straps have been connected with the shoulder-straps by means of an adjustable or other connection which could be manipulated so as to disconnect the back straps forming the suspenderend from the shoulder-straps, no means have been provided' whereby the back straps could be drawn down again for reattachmentto the suspender-end. The using of any detachable connection between the shoulder-straps and back suspender-end for letting down the trousers without unbuttoning the straps of the suspender-end from the trousers has heretofore been impracticable. The reason is that when the back suspender-end was detached from the shoulder-straps and the trousers let down the shoulder-straps would fly or be drawn up out of reach of the wearer when lnary shoulder-straps of a pair of suspenders,

provided at their front ends with the usual front suspender-ends, a a, each of which is shown as consisting, essentially, of a pair of button-holed straps suitably connected together.

B designates the back suspender-end, which consists of the two connected button holed straps or ends, adapted to be buttoned onto the two back buttons ofv a pair of trousers. Such back suspender-end can be either made in one piece or in two pieces fastened together by a suitable tab or yoke, C, of leather, metal, or any other desired material.

Without departure from my invention, the endV can be made in various ways and of any suitable material. Instead, however, of being sewed or otherwise permanently attached to the shoulder-straps, as heretefore, the back suspender-end is connected by me with the shoulder-straps by means of an easily-unfastened connection. y

One form of such connection I show in Fig. 1. In this figure the piece C, attached to the back suspender-end, B, is shown as provided with a loop or button-hole, c, and the shoulderstraps A A have attached to them the piece D, preferably of metal, and having the hook d adapted to engage the loop or button-hole in piece O. Such hook is preferably made of spring material, such as the hooks, clasps, or snaps now used for connecting the front susponder-ends with the shoulder-straps, or with buckles on such straps, are now made of. With this construction, when the buttonhole straps of the front and back suspender-ends have been buttoned to the back and front buttons of the trousers in the usual way, and it is desired to let the trousers down, all that is necessary is simply to unhook piece O from hook d. The trousers can then be let down with the back suspender-end still buttoned in place.

The shoulder-straps merely draw up the back then as the front ofthe trousers descends.

In order to provide means for drawing the shoulderstraps down the back again when the trousers are to be supported, I attach to such straps, or preferably to the piece D, as shown, a tape, strap, ribbon, or short band, E, which, when piece D is up the back, as when the trousers are down, can be easily seized and drawn down to bring the hook d into position to be hooked into eye or button-hole c again. The lower portion of this strap, tape, or ribbon can then be tucked into the back of the trousers, ont ofthe way.

In Fig. 2 I Show a diii'erent forni of detachable connection between the shoulder-straps and the back snspenderend. In this form the shoulderstraps at their point ofjuneture are provided with a button, F, adapted to engage the buttouhole c in the piece C on the back suspender-end.

In Fig. 3 I show a piece, G, to be used, if desired, instead ofthe suspender-end, with the button-holed straps to engage the back buttons. Such piece consists of a triangular loop, of metal, cord, or other material, which at its lower angles is adapted to engage the back buttons, as shown, and at its upper angle or apex is engaged by the hook d, connected with the shoulderstraps.

It will be understood, of course, that I do not limit myself to the relative arrangements of the separate parts of the detachable connection as described and shown.

If desired, the hook d can be attached to the hack suspender-end, and the eye or hole c can be in a piece attached to the shoulder-straps.

The saine change in the described arrangement of the button F and button-hole therefor can also be made.

I do not claim as my invention a strap attached to the shoulderstraps and connected with the suspenderAend by a buekle,as such construction is merely to provide an adjustable connection between the shoulder-straps and the said end. My pendent strap or tape does not form any part of the construction between the shoulderstrap and the suspenden end.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim isl. In a pair of Suspenders, in combination with the shoulder-straps, the back suspenden end, the hook-andeye or loop connection between the shoulderstraps and suspender-end, and a pendent tape or strip connected wit-h the shoulder-straps and independent of the connection between the shoulder-straps and suspender-end, substantially as and for the purpose described.

2. In combination with the shoulderstraps, the back suspender-end, and the detachable connection between such straps and end, the tape or strip fastened to tho shoulder-straps at the back for drawing such straps downward, substantially as and for the purpose described.
