Beit known that l, PHILIP NORMAN Evans,

a subject of the Queen of Great Britain, and a resident of Holyoke, in the county of Hamp- 5 den and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Card- Board Clips; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others ro skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, whichform a part of this speciiication, and in which* y Figure lis a side view of my improved clamp. Fig. 2 is a horizontal sectional view of the same on the line in Fig. l. Fig. 3 is a horizontal sectional view on the line y y in Fig. l, and Fig. 11 is a detail view.

This invention relates to that class of devices which areknown as cardboard clips, and it has for its object to provide'certain new and useful improvements in the construction of the same, whereby a simple, durable, and

inexpensive article shall be produced, the ecnstruetion and operation of which will be hereinafter described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.

3o Gard-board clips as ordinarily constructed consist of single or separate clips or clamps, each comprising a pair of legs connected pivotally and having a. spring interposed between their upper ends, whereby their lower ends shall be forced together, so as to be capable of grasping and holding a sheet of card-board when interposed between the said legs or jaws. These clips or clamps are used for the purpose of suspending the sheets of card-board while 5.o drying, after the sheets composing the cardboard have been pasted together.

My invention consists in combining in a single device a series of any desired number of clips or clamps, by means of which a num.-

ber of sheets may be suspended, thereby saving time in adjusting the sheets, and producing a device which is in every respect superior te and more convenient than the single clips or clamps ordinarily employed.

5o In the drawings hereto annexed I have showna clip adapted to hold four sheets oi card-board. It will be seen that this consists of a central wedge-shaped body, A, having an upwardly-extending shank, I3, provided at iis upper end with a l1ool:,C, by means of which 5 5 the device may be readilysuspended. The sides of the said body are provided with recesses or kerfs D l), to receive the small eircular disks or plates E E, byaneans of which the said body is pivotally connected with simi- 6o larly-shaped wedges F F, the connections being formed by the transverse pins G G. Similarly pivoted to the outer edges of the wedges F F are the end pieces, H H, the upper ends of which are provided with suitable thumbpieces or handles, Ill H2. The lower adjoining edges oi' the end pieces and the several wedge-shaped bodies are provided with recesses 0r indentations I I, so that only the extreme lower ends shall come in contact with 7o each other when the upper ends are expanded by the action of the springs J J, which are iuterposed between the upper ends of the several parts, the ends of the said springs being y seated in recesses K, formed for their reception, as clearly shown in Fig. 2, in order to prevent the displacement of the said springs.`

In order to brace and strengthen the device, a wire, L, may be passed transversely through the wedges A F F and the end pieces, II H, SO directly above the pivoting-point, as shown in the drawings. This, however, is not absolutely necessary, and it may be dispensed with without departing from the spirit of my invention.

The operation of this device will be readily understood. By compressing the thumbpieces or handles HF HL the lower ends of the several clamps are forced apart, thus enabling the sheets of card-board to be inserted. releasing the pressure upon the thumb-pieces the lower ends of the clamps will be forced together by the action of the springs, thus grasping and holding the sheets, .whichl may then be conveniently suspended. 95 The advantages of this invention will be readily appreciated by those skilled in the art to which it appertains. may be saved. It may also be more conveniently suspended than the single clamps ordinarily employed. Owing to the recesses or indentations I I, the sheets are grasped and held by the extreme points of the clam-ps only, a current of air being admitted, which will serve to drive the edge of the sheet at the point at which it is held and prevent the edges of the sheet from sticking to the clamps at the point of contact.

Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United Statesl. The combination; with a series of clamps connected pivotally, of the pivoted end pieces having upwardly-extending thumb-pieces or handles, substantially as and for the purpose herein set forth.

2. In a clip or clamping device comprising a series of clamps pivotally connected with each other, the herein-described central clamp having an upwardly-extending handle provided with a hook at its upper end, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.

3. The herein-described improved clip or 25 clamping device, the same consisting of a series of clamps pivotally connected, the central clamp being provided with an upwardlyextending handle, the pivoted end pieces having thumb-pieces at their upper ends, the 3o said clamps and end. pieces being provided with recesses or indentations at their lower adjoiningvedges, and springs interposed between the upper ends of the said clamps and end pieces and seated in recesses in the same, 3 5 substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
