UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
NELS JOHNSON, OF GROVE CITY, MINNESOTA.
SUPPORTED.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, NELs JOHNSON, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Grove City, in the county of Meeker and State of Minnesota, have invented new and useful Improvements in Supporters, of which the following is a s ecification.
My invention re ates to improvements in skirt supporters, and its primary object is to provide a device of this character by means of which the lower edge of a skirt may be supported above the ground from the belt.
A further object of my invention is to provide a supporter which may be readily and quickly applied and removed, one which is simple, durable and efhcient, and one which may be manufactured and sold at a comparatively low cost.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, wherein:
Figure 1 is a perspective View illustrating the application of myimproved skirt supporter. Fig. 2 is a detail view in edge elevation of the supporter, the jaws being illustrated in active positions. Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. 2, the jaws being shown in inactive positions. Fig. 4 is a detail plan view in side elevation of the supporter, and Fig. 5 is a detail plan view illustrating the manner in which the supporter is folded for storage or shipment.
Similar reference characters designate the same parts in. the several figures of the drawing.
My improved supporter comprises a pair of clamps A and B which are pivotally con nected together at their inner ends by means of a pin 2. The connection between the clamps is such that one clamp may be folded within the other when it is desired to store or ship the supporter. Each clamp comprises a pair of laterally resilient and outwardly diverging arms 3 which are provided at their outer ends withjaws 4. The jaws4 are circular and their diameters are greater than the transverse extents of the arms 3, the jaws be ing secured to the inner sides of the arms by means of rivets 6. The arms normally retain the jaws in inactive or opened position,

and are adapted tobe adjusted to move the jaws into and hold them in their active or clamping positions through the medium of members 5 which receive and are slidably mounted upon the arms. The members, 5 consist of oblong rectangular frames the major axes of which are greater than the diameters of the jaws 4, whereby the members may be removed from the clamps. When the members are removed from the clamps one clamp may be folded within the other. After the clamps have been thus folded the members are again applied to secure them in such condition.
In practice, one clamp of the supporter is secured to the belt, while the other clamp is secured to a fold of the skirt, as clearly illustrated in Fig. 1 of the drawing.
It should be apparent taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, that the device is admirably adapted for supporting the lower edge of the skirt above the ground, that the same is simple, durable and eflicient, and that it may be manufactured and sold at a comparatively low cost. It should also be apparent that the device may be folded into a compact form for shipment or storage, thus admirably adapting it to be carried in a purse.
Changes in the form, proportions and minor details of construction may be made within the scope of the claim without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
Having fully described and illustrated my invention, what I claim is:
A supporter of the character set forth comprising a pair of clamps pivotally connected together at their inner ends, each of the clamps consisting of'a pair of laterally resilient and outwardly diverging arms, circular jaws secured to the arms, and members slidably mounted upon the clamps, the members consisting of oblong frames the major axes of which are greater than the diameters of the aws. I
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
NELS JOHNSON.
Witnesses:

EDWARD P. PETERSON.
