To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ALBERT Kzrrznna citizen of the United States, residing in- Milwaukie, county of Clackamas, and State of Oregon, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Emery-Cloth Flles,

. of which the following is a specification.

. which are hinged together in a way which makes it possible to break the joint, andto attach the opposite ends of a strip of emery cloth, or the like, to the outer ends of said parts, and then by closing themtogether to i stretch the emery cloth lengthwise on the device; to provide'in a deviceof the character referred to, two parts which can be frictionally held together, with means for increasing, or diminishing, the frlctlon therebetween, as desired; toprovide a simple means in the ends of said parts, whereby said strips of emery cloth can be quickly and effectively attached or detached and firmly held.

In order that others may understand my invention, I have illustrated one practical embodiment thereof in the accompanying sheet of drawings, which I will now describe.

Figure 1 is a top plan view of a device embodying my invention;

Fig. 2 is an edge view thereof;

Fig. 3 is an edge view of the two parts, with their joint broken to loosen the emery cloth attached thereto;

Fig. 4 is a cross sectional view taken on line 44 of Fig. 2; and

Fig. 5 is a cross sectional view through a slightly modified form of the device having one round side and one square side.

Referring now more in detail to the drawings, my device comprises a two-part memher, the parts of which are designated 1 and 2, hingedly secured together, as by means of a screw 3. The part 1, has its middle portion cut out longitudinally thereof to receive therebetween a portion 2 of the part 2. The cuts made in the part 1, are extended, as at 1, and said part 1, is provided with a screw 4:, whereby as said screw 4;, is tightened, the two sides of the part 1 will be drawn together into closer frictional engagement with the middle part 2, of the part 2. The outer ends of the parts 1 and 2, are provided with transversely extending sockets 5 and 6, as clearly indicated in the edge views of Figs. 2 and 3, said sockets being larger at their inner ends than they are at their outer ends. A strip of emery cloth 7 is folded at its ends and inserted edgewise into the receiving sockets 5 and 6, while the parts are in the positions shown in Fig. 3. When said parts 1 and 2 are closed together, as in Figs. 1 and 2, it will be clear that the emery cloth 7, will be stretched lengthwise of the device. baid emerv cloth can be placed on either side of the parts 1 and 2, so as to have either a flat base or a rounding base, as desired. When it is placed upon the rounded side of the members 1 and 2, said members are opened in the opposite direction from that indicated in Fig. 3, and the emery cloth attached as before described.

The parts 1 and 2 may be made in various forms, as for example, in Fig. 5, I have shown it of narrower construction, having a round side and a square side. In this figure, 8, designates the part corresponding to part 1 in the other form, and 9 designates the part corresponding to part 2 in said other form. The emery cloth 10, is shown as stretched along the rounded side of said device. This form of the device can be inserted in a round hole for smoothing the inside thereof, the emery cloth conforming readily to the form of the member upon which it is stretched.

While I have used the terms emery cloth and sand paper, I wish it understood that any kind of smoothing or polishing strips can be attached to my device.

I do not limit my invention to the particular forms here shown for purposes of illustration, except as I may be limited by the hereto appended claims.

I claim:

1. A device of the character referred to, comprising a two-part member, the parts of which are arranged in overlapping relationship with each other and pivoted together intermediate the ends. of each, in the same plane, to be moved apart transversely of the plane occupied by the parts when closed together, said parts being of substantially the same thickness throughout, and a strip of emery cloth attached at its opposite ends to the extreme opposite ends of said parts, substantially as described.

2. A device of the character shown and described, comprising in combination, a twopart member, one part of which has a middle longitudinal portion out therefrom, and the other part of which has two side longitudinal portions cut therefrom, the middle portion of one part being pivotally secured between the side portions of the other part, and a piece of emery cloth, having its opposite ends secured to the outer ends of said device, whereby as the parts of said device are closed together said emery cloth is stretched thereupon.

A device of the character shown and described, comprising in combination, a twopart member, one part of which has a middle longitudinal portion cut therefrom, and the other part of which has two side longitudinal portions cut therefrom, the middle portion of one part being pivotally secured between the side portions of the other part, a piece of emery cloth, having its opposite ends secured to the outer ends of said device, whereby as the parts of said device are closed together said emery cloth is stretched thereupon, and means for increasing the frictional engagement of the interfitt-ing portions of said device. 7

4:. A- device of the character shown and described, comprising a two-part member, one part of which has a middle, longitudinally extending portion thereof cut away,

and the other part of which has two side longitudinally extending portions thereof cut away, the middle portion of one part being pivotally secured between the side portions of the other part, whereby said parts can be closed together in alinement with each other to form a uniform strip, means for holding said parts together, said parts being provided on their outer ends with holding sockets adapted to receive the opposite ends of 'a strip of emery cloth, and a strip of emery'cloth having its opposite ends detachably secured in said holding sockets, substantially as described.

5. A device of the character referred to, comprising a two-part member, one part of which has two longitudinally extending side portions, and the other part of which has a longitudinally extending middle portion pivotally connected between the side portions of said first part, said parts being adapted to be moved relative to each other into and out of alinement, the outer ends of said parts being provided with holding sockets adapted to receive the opposite ends of a strip of emery cloth, and a strip of emery cloth having its opposite ends attached to the outer ends of said members, whereby as said members are closed together they operate to stretch said emery cloth lengthwise thereupon.
