Application November 6, 1958, Serial No. 772,362 4 Claims. c1. 51-187) My invention is directed to portable sanding devices adapted to hold a plurality of superposed sheets of abrasive paper or abrasive cloth.
It is an important object of my invention to provide a novel portable hand sander which has novel structural features providing for quick, easy and correct mounting and retention of a plurality of abrasive sheets, said sheets being easily individually and successively removable as the same are worn away topre sent for use the adjacent abrasive sheet.
A further object of my invention is the provision of a portable hand sanding device having a pair of blocks pivotally or hingedly connected together by a flexible pad or strip secured on their bottom faces, and having end opening recesses for receiving, and removably engaging the end portions of a plurality of flexible abrasive sheets, said blocks being pivotal to angular positions relative to each other to facilitate the insertion of the end portions of a plurality of abrasive sheets, the movement of said blocks to end abutting aligned position being adapted to stretch tightly the intermediate portions of said abrasive sheets; and said devices having releasable hook means for holding said blocks in end abutting and aligned positions.
A further object of my invention is the provision of a portable sanding device as recited in the preceding paragraph and wherein the abrasive sheets may be singly and successively torn away and removed as the same are used up, without affecting the mounted position of abrasive sheets beneath the sheet being removed.
Other and further important objects of my invention will be apparent from the following description and appended claims.
Fig. 1 is a prospective view of my novel sanding device embodying the novel features of my invention.
Fig. 2 is a side elevation showing my device with the blocks in angular position relative to each other and illustrating the manner of loading abrasive sheets therein.
Fig. 3 is an end view thereof, with parts broken away and with the hook removed and elevated.
As shown on the drawings: Numerals and 11 designate a pair of substantially rectangular blocks which may be of wood, plastic or other suitable material. Each of said blocks have their opposite side faces recessed to form concave faces 12 and 13 respectively to facilitate gripping and holding of the device during use and to prevent slippage thereof from the hands. Each of said blocks has an outer end face 14, and a relatively deep slot or recess 15 is formed transversely to open upon the end faces 14 respectively, as indicated in Figs. 1 and 2.
The inner or normally abutting end faces of said blocks designated as 16 are substantially flat as illustrated in Fig. 2, and a pair of holes or recesses 17 are formed in spaced apart positions in the block 10 to open on said inner face. The other block 11 has a pair of metal pegs or points 18 mounted therein in positions to seat in the two holes 17 respectively when the blocks are in adjacent or abutting positions, into inter-engagement of said points and said blocks aids in maintaining the two blocks in proper position relative to each other during use.

Numeral 20 designates a flexible preferably resilient pad of yieldable material Which is of substantially rectangular shape and which is secured by a coating of cement or adhesive 19 to the frame between faces of blocks 10 and 11, said securance being with said blocks in end to end contacting positions. 1 found rubber or rubberlike compositions to be highly satisfactory for the pad 20 as the same provides a proper cushion for the sheets of abrasive paper here and after described. It will be noted that said flexible pad 20 pivotedly or hingedly connects said blocks relative to each other so that the same may be pivoted to different positions such as illustrated in Fig. 2, for the purpose of either loading or inserting the abrasive sheets or for removal of such sheets.
Numeral 21 designates a plurality of sand paper 'or of thin abrasive sheets which are preferably of rectangular form and of substantially equal sizes, and of a length so that the same will transverse the entire face of the pad and the opposite ends thereof will be bent over and seated in the oppositely opening recesses or slots 15. An important advantage of providing pivotal or hinged-like means for connecting the two blocks 10 and 11 in the manner described is that a substantial number of said abrasive sheets in super-posed adjacent position may be manually, quickly and easily inserted first in one of said recesses 15 and then the opposite adjacent ends of said sheets are inserted in the opposite recesses 15 while the said blocks 10 and 11 are in angular position relative to each other, for example as illustrated in Fig. 2. When both ends of the group of super-posed abrasive sheets 21 are inserted in their respective slots or recesses 15 the two blocks are moved and pivoted into aligned end to end positions as illustrated in Fig. 1, which movement causes the sheets of abrasive material to be drawn relatively tight and in flat relationship with respect to the pad 20.
Each of said blocks has a hole or recess 22 formed therein and opening on its upper face, as illustrated in Fig. l. A metal bail-like hook having angularly bent ends and of the proper length is adapted to be removably inserted in the respective holes 22 to thereby connect and hold the two blocks in aligned end to end positions and thereby prevent any pivoting movement thereof during normal use.
Numerals 24 designates a pair of relatively shallow and large recesses formed in the upper portion of said blocks 10 and 11 respectively which provide for partial insertion of the users fingers below the hook 23 to facilitate removal of the hook 23 whenever desired.
My novel portable sanding device is a great labor and time saver and one of its several advantages is in the quick and easy loading and correct mounting of sheets of abrasive paper in the described manner, and which are adapted to be easily removed one at a time as the same are worn, without disturbing the ready-to-use positions of the remaining abrasive sheets which are held in relatively tight mounted position adjacent the yieldable pad.
While the foregoing specification sets forth the invention in specific terms, it is to be understood that numerous changes in the shape, size and materials may be resorted to without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed hereinafter and it is contemplated that various changes may be made in the embodiment of the invention herein specifically described without departing from or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention or any features thereof, and nothing herein shall be construed as limitations upon the invention, its concept or structural embodiment as to the Whole 1. In a portable hand sanding device, a pair of substantially rectangular blocks having flat bottom faces; each of said blocks having a transversely extending end opening recess; a flexible pad secured on the bottom faces of said blocks and pivotally connecting said blocks together; said blocks having upwardly opening recesses; and a double hook having its end portions releasably engaging said upper openings of said blocks in end-to-end aligned position, said end opening recesses being adapted to engage and. hold the end portions of a plurality of abrasive sheets.
2. In a portable hand sanding device, a pair of blocks having fiat bottom faces and having end opening recesses thereon; a flexible yieldable member secured on the bottom faces of said blocks and. normally holding said blocks connected together, said blocks being pivotable with respect' to each other; said end recesses of said blocks being adapted to engage the opposite end portions respectively of a plurality of abrasive sheets; and releasable hook means engaging the upper openings of said blocks and adapted to releasably hold said blocks in end-to-end aligned positions.
3. In a portable sanding device for holding a plurality to hold said blocksv of removable abrasive sheets; a pair of substantially rectangular blocks having flat bottom faces and having abutting end faces and having transversely extending end opening recesses in one end of each thereof; said blocks having upwardly opening apertures therein; a flexible strip of yieldable material secured on the bottom faces of said blocks; and a double hook releasably engaging the I upwardly opening holes in said blocks to normally hold the same in aligned position, said transverse end opening recesses being adapted to hold a plurality of superposed abrasive sheets with the intermediate portions of said sheets adjacent said strip of material.

A portable sanding device substantially as recited in claim 3 and wherein oneof said blocks has a plurality of depressions opening in the end thereof normally abutting the other block, and wherein said second block has a plurality of projecting pins on its abutting end adapted to seat in said depressions when said blocks are in end to end positions.
