Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 5, 1919.
Application filed October 15, 1917. Serial No. 196,623.
To all whom t may concern.' u
Be it known that I, EDWIN G. SCHLOSS, a citizen of the United States, and resident of New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in `Folding Tables, of which the following is a specilication.
This invention relates to a folding table which essentially includes pairs of swingingly mounted legs adapted to fold under the top of the table.
The fundamental object of the invention is to provide a simple and efficient device to positively lock or prevent any movement of the legs when they are open.
The novel features of the invention are more fully described in the following speciiication and claims and illustrated in the accompanying drawing in which l Figurel represents a vertical longitudinal section of a table embodying this invention.
Fig. 2 is an inverted plan view of the same.
Fig. 8 is a transverse section of the upper portion of the table.
Fig. a is a detail horizontal section 0f a. wedge block on a larger scale.
In this drawing the letter a designates va top which is preferably rectangular and I) are the legs hinged at 0 to the under surface lof the top. A transverse strip 0l is secured at each end of the top to brace the top and constitute a stop for the legs when open. As shown in the drawing, there are four legs connected together in pairs, one pair being out of alinement `with the other pair so that when folded one leg will lie alongside of the other as indicated by the dotted lines in Fig. 2. y
Each pair of the legs is connected together by means of a transverse bar or strip e carrying a wedge block fwhich can form an integral part of the bar, but as shown is preferably adjustable. The adjusting devices for each wedge 'comprehends a slot h formed in the bar, a screw i passing through the Slot and threaded to engage the wedge member.
I the flap.
At the central portion of the top is pivoted at j a leaf or flap c extending longitudinally along the lower portion of the top. When the flap is swung downward as shown in full lines in Fig. 2,-the ends of the flap will engage the wedges on each of the bars e and hold the legs in their vertical posit1on.
When it is desired to Shift the block laterally in order to take up any play room or wear between the block and flap, the screw is loosened and the block moved along the `limits of the slot with the screw stem as a guide.
In order to collapse the legs all that is necessary is to swing the flap 7c upwardly to a flat position on the under surface of the top as indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 2. Each pair of legs can then be swung over under the top and a strap m secured to the top is made to bindl two of the legs together, so `as to prevent all of the legs from opening. When in this form, the table is almost flat, and can be conveniently transported or stored away to take up a small Space.
It will be readily understood that when the ends of the swinging flap c are jammed against the inclined surfaces of the wedge blocks, it cannot be unlocked until considerable force is applied to the lower end of The iiap by the medium of the wedge blocks, thus constitutes apositive lock for the swinging legs holding them rigid in their open positions.
l. A folding table comprising a top, pairs of legs swingingly connected to the lower portion of the top, each pair having a transverse bar, a wedge member carried by each bar, means including a screw secured to the wedge for adjusting the wedge laterally, and a longitudinal flap swingingly mounted on the lower surface of the top for engagement' with the wedges.
2. A folding table comprising a top, pairs of legs swingingly connected to the lower portion of the top, each pair having a Slotted transverse bar, a wedge member carried by each bar, means including a screw coactthe county of New York and Stante of New ing with the slot and secured to :L Wedge for York this 9th day of October A. D. 1917. adjusting the Wedde later-ally and a longitudinal` flap swinzngly inoiinted on the v EDWIN G' SCHLOSS' 5 lower.. aslinfaize Ofi the top for engagement Vitnesses:
