TROUSERS HANGER AND STRETCHER.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, RICHARD DAVIES, a citizen of Great Britain, residing at San Francisco, in the county of'San Francisco and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Trousers Hangers and Stretchers, of which the following is a specification.

This invention has for its object to supply a device which may be used both for stretching trousers and supporting the same from a hook or analogous device.

One of the principal objects of the invention is the provision of an article of the character aforesaid which is light, serviceable and effective for the purpose designed and which enables the trousers to be stretched to any degree so as to preserve the crease lines and to take out any fullness that may be occasioned by wear.

The invention, consists of the novel fea tures, details of construction and combinations of parts which hereinafter will be more particularly set forth, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the appended claims.

Referring to the drawings forming a part of the specification: Figure 1 is a view in elevation of a combined trousers hanger and stretcher embodying the invention showing the relation of the parts when applied to the trousers preliminary to the stretching operation. Fig. 2 is a view similar to Fig. 1 showing the position of the parts when operated to stretch the trousers. Fig. 3 is an enlarged sectional view on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a horizontal section of one of the clips and the member attached thereto on the line 4-4 of Fig. 1 showing the parts on a larger scale.

Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the drawings by the same reference characters.

The appliance comprises similar side members and clips at the ends of said memher. One of the members comprises bars 1 and 2 which are pivotally connected at 3. The other member comprises bars 5 and 6 which are pivotally connected at 7. The bars 1 and 5 are of equal length. The bars 2 and 6 are considerably shorter than the bars 1 and 5 and are of like length. Each of the bars is provided at its outer end with a clip 8 which may be of any construction comprising pivoted members adapted to Specification of Letters Patent.

grip between them the trousers or other article to be stretched. Each of the clips 8 comprises similar members which are pivotally connected and forced apart at one end by means of a stout spring so as to press the opposite ends of the members together to cause them to firmly grip the trousers when placed between the gripping ends of the members.

Links 9 are pivotally connected at their outer ends to clips at the outer ends of the bars 1 and 5 and are pivotally connected at their inner ends to a hook 10 or analogous suspending device. A bar 11 is pivoted at 12 to the bar 5 and is provided along one edge with a series of teeth 18 which are adapted to make adjustable connection with a keeper 14 secured to the bar 1 opposite the pivotal connection of the bar 11 with the bar 5. The keeper 14 consists of a block secured to one side of the bar 1 and having an end portion cut away as indicated at 15 in Fig. 3 so as to receive the bar 11 and prevent lateral displacel'l'ient thereof. A notch 16 is provided near the iuner'or pivoted end of the bar 11 and is adapted to receive the portion of the keeper 14 at the inner end of the cut-away part, so as to hold the members of the device in position when applying the same to the trousers as indicated in Fig. 1.

WVhen it is required to apply the device to a pair of trousers for stretching the same, the members are brought together and secured by letting the upper end of the keeper 14 enter the notch 16 after which the end portions of the bars 1 and 5 and 2 and G are spread and the clips attached thereto fitted to the trousers about as indicated in Figs.

'1 and 2, the clips at the upper ends of the bars 1 and 5 being secured to the bottoms of the trousers legs near the front and back creases and the clips attached to the bars 2 and 6 being applied to the front and rear crease lines opposite the thigh or upper portion of the trousers. After the members have been attached to the trousers, the latter are stretched by separating the points 3 and 7 which are pressed apart, said members being secured in the adjusted position by engaging one of the series of teeth 13 with the keeper 14. When the bars 1 and 2 and 5 and 6 of the respective members are straightened, the clips at their opposite ends are moved apart thereby stretching the trousers held thereby. In this connection it is to be understood that the clips must be of such construction as 'to prevent possible slipping during the pressing process. The degree of stretching may be regulated by the straightening of the bars comprising the respective members. It will be understood that the trousers are stretched both longitudinally and transversely, both operations being brought about by separation of the members comprising the device.

From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, the advantages of the construction and of the method of operation will be readily apparent to those skilled in the art to which the invention appertains, and while I have described the principle of operation of the invention, together with the device which I now consider to be the best embodiment thereof, I desire to have it understood that the device shown is merely illustrative, and that such changes may be made when de sired as are within the scope of the claims appended hereto.

Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is l. A garment stretcher comprising similar side members, each of the side members consisting of bars pivotally connected at their inner ends, attaching means at the outer ends of the bars for securing the same to the garment to be stretched, and means spreading the bars whereby the outer ends of the side members are moved apart both longitudinally and transversely so as to stretch the garment in two directions.

2. A garment stretcher comprising similar side members, each of the side members consisting of two bars pivot-ally connected at their inner ends, attaching means pivotally connected to the'outer ends of the bars for securing the same to the garment to be stretched, and means for spreading the side members whereby their outer ends are moved apart both longitudinally and transversely.

3. A garment stretcher comprising similar side members, each of the side members consisting of bars pivotally connected at their inner ends, clips pivotally connected to the outer ends of the bars, a toothed bar pivotally connected at one end to one of the side members near the joint between the bars thereof, said toothed bar having a notch near its pivoted end, and a stop provided upon the other side member near the joint between the bars thereof to engage either the teeth or the notch of the toothed bar.
