JAMES R. FERGUSON AND JOHN FERGUSON, OF CHESTER, CONNECTICUT.
TlDY-HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 415,770, dated November 26, 1889.
Application filed January 9, 1889. Serial No. 295,838. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that we, JAMES R. FERGUSON and JOHN FERGUSON, citizens of the United States, residing at Chester, in the county of Middlesex and State of Connecticut, have i11- vented certain new and useful Improvements in Tidy-Holders; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a perspective view of our improved tidy-holder, showing it in position on the chair-back, the latter being illustrated in dotted lines; Fig. 2, a modification thereof in perspective, and Fig. 3 a detail view of the jaw of the holder which fits over the chair-back.
The present invention has for its object to provide asimple and effective device for holdin g a tidy on the back of a chair or other article of furniture without injury thereto or to the tidy, however delicate in texture; and it consists in the details of construction substantially asshown in the drawings, and hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, A represents a strand of wire of suitable length and strength, which is bent at its ends to form jaws B of any preferred construction tofit over the upper edge of the chair-back, the free ends of the jaws terminating in grips a.
. A second wire C is provided, which is bent at its ends to form clamps D of any preferred construction, that will serve to clamp the device on the back of the chair and also against the tidy placed over the same, said clamps at their ends terminating in grips b.
The two wires A C, which form the arms of the device, are connected together by twisting as shown at c, or in any other desirable manner, and slides d encircle the arms as a means for tightly securing the holder on the chairback by bringing the clamp firmly against it.
In place of the construction shown in Fig. 1 above described the jaw and clamp at each end of the device can be made from a single piece of wire of the required length and connected together by a link 6, as shown in Fig. 2.
The grips a b in the construction shown in Figs. 1 and 2 are formed by bending the wire into small rings or eyes; but any well-known form of grip may be substituted or the ends may be flattened, as shown at f, Fig. 3, which would serve the same purpose as the eyes or rings. J
Previous to the device being placed over the back of the chair the slides should be pushed back on the arms as far as they will go, after which the jaws are placed over the upper edge of the chair-back and over the tidy previously placed thereon. The slides are next drawn toward the end of the holder to compress the arms of the clamps and force them tightly against the rear side of the chairback, which will firmly hold the tidy in place thereon.
The jaws of the device will slip over the edge of the chair-back without danger of scratching or otherwise marring the chair or tearing or injuring the tidy, and by means of the clamps and the slides heretofore described the tidy may be held loose or tight, as desired. If the tidyis a heavy fabric, the device can by means of the clamps and slides be made to hold the tidy so tightly that it would be impossible to draw itout when a person is.
sitting in the chair.
Having now fully described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In a holder for tidies or other similar articles, an arm or arms extending horizontally and having at the ends jaws adapted to fit over the chair-back, in combination with a second arm or arms connected thereto at or near the center and extending lengthwise thereof and terminating at the extremities in grips, and slides encircling the said arms upon either side of the point of connection to clamp the same tightly upon the chair-back, sub stantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that we claim the above we have hereunto subscribed our names in the presence of two witnesses.
