To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, LUTHER MERRELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at-San Martin, in the county of Santa Clara and State of California, have invented a new and useful Article-Holder, of which the following is a specification.

The present invention appertainsto article holders, and aims to provide a novel and improved device of that character for holding an article, such as a broom, newspaper, tool, or the like, in an effective and firm manner.

The present article holder has peculiarities of construction and details, to enhance the utility and efficiency thereof, and the device is adapted to be bent or fashioned from wire or similar stock, in an inexpensive and convenient manner, to renderthe device thoroughly practical and efficient in use.

\Vith the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention hereindisclosed can be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.

The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, wherein Figure l is a front view of one form of theinvention. Fig. 2 is a top view thereof. Fig. 3 is an end view. Fig. 4 is a front view of a second form of the invention. Fig. 5 is a sectional view taken on the line 5- 5 of Fig. 4. Fig. 6 is a front view of another modification. Fig. 7 is a front view of still another variation. Fig. 8 is a top iew of the form illustrated in Fig. 7. Fig. 9 is an end view of the variation illustrated in Fig.7.

Referring specifically to Figs. 1, 2, and3, there is employed in the holder illustrated therein, a wire clip 1 carried by a wooden or equivalent back or base 2. This clip 1 is bent from a single length of suitable wire, whereby the intermediate portion of the wire provides a yoke 3 which has terminal refiexed or bent back portions 4 providing the loops 5 through which rivets or other securing elements 6 are engaged to clamp the yoke 3 and portions 4 against the back 2. The portions 4 have portions 7 curved away from the yoke 3 and back 2. From the portions 7, the wire-extends outwardly at right angles relative to the back 2, to provide the outstanding arms 8, and the arms 8 have arms .9 bent back therefrom adjacent the yoke 3 and parallel with the arms 8. The

bends 10 between the arms 8 and 9 are curved away from the arms 8. Eachpair of armsS and 9 provide a jaw, it being noted that the arm8 of each jaw is attached to the adjacent or free ends of the yokes 11 are spaced slightly apart, and have outstanding arms or fingers 12 parallel with one another and arranged at right angles relative to the back 2. The arms 12 project away from the back, and are parallel with thearms 8 and 9. The flexibility ofthe jaws 8-9 allows the yokes 11 to swing .ina plane parallel with the back 2, whereby the jaws or arms 12 may move to and from ailine connecting the jaws 89. seen in dotted-lines in Fig.- 1. The article A will thus be tightly held between the jaws, and vdue to the factthat the yokes, llare swung out of normal position, the clip will be brought under tension for clamping the article between the jaws.

In the modification illustrated in Figs. 4 and 5, the clip 1 which is carried by the back or base 2 is constructed of two pieces of wire having the portions 3 which have their adjacent ends engaged through the back 2, as at 3", and the remote ends of the portions 3 are provided with bent back portions 4 providing the loops 5 through which the securing elements 6 are engaged.

The form illustrated in Fig. 6 is the same as the form illustrated in Figs. 4c and 5, with the exception that the jaws 12 of the clip 1 are normally arranged closer to a line connecting the jaws 8*, whereby a smaller article may be held.

The holder illustrated in Figs. 7, 8 and 9 is somewhat different in construction than the other holders illustrated, but embodies a number of the advantageous features thereof. The clip 1 is constructed from a single length of wire and is carried by the back or base 2". The wire clip l has a portion 3" resting against the back 2 and provided at one end with an outstanding arm 9* arranged at right angles with the back 2". An arm S is bent back from the free or outer end of the arm 9 and has its inner end engaged through the back 2 The arms 8 and 9 provide one jaw which has its free or outer end curved, as at 10". The other end of the portion 3 has a reflexed portion 4 forming aloop 5 through which a securing element 6 is engaged, and the portione has a portion '7 curved away from the portion 3 and back 2. Theportion 7 hasan outstanding arm 8 parallel with the arm 8' and arranged at right angles with the back 2*. The arm 8 has an arm 9 bent back therefrom and projecting toward the back 2 parallel with the arm 8. The arms 8 and 9 provide a jaw having the curved end portion 10. The arm 9 is provided at its inner or free end with an angularly extending yoke or portion 11 parallel with the back 2 and projecting toward the jaw 8 9 and the free end of the yoke or portion 11" is provided with an outstanding arm 12 between the jaws 8-9 and 8-9. The arm 12 provides a jaw having the eye 13 at its free end. The article is adapted to be held between the armor jaw 12* and the jaws 8"...9 and 8--9.

I The severalv forms of the invention have common and characteristic features of construction and utility, due to the general and special details of construction, as will be obvious by reference to the drawing.

The article holders may be constructed in various sizes andstyles for holding various articles, such as brooms newspapers, tools, and what not.

Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is:

1. An article holder comprising a back and wire clip carried thereby, said clip having a pair of doubled portions providing a gair of jaws, the jaws being arranged at an angle with the back, one arm of each jaw being attached to the back and the other arm being flexible, a yoke carried by the last mentioned arm of each of said jaws, the yokes projecting toward one another and having outstanding jaws for clamping an article upon the aforesaid jaws.

2. An article holder comprising a back and wire clip carried thereby, said clip having a pair of doubled portions providing a pair of jaws, the jaws being arranged at an angle with the back, one arm of each jaw being attached to the back and the other arm being flexible, a yoke carried by the last mentioned arm of each of said jaws, and outstanding jaws carried by said yokes for clamping an article upon the aforesaid jaws.

3. In an article holder, a back, and a wire clip carried thereby, said clip having an outstanding jaw and a doubled portion providing a second outstanding jaw, one arm of the doubled portion being attached to the back and the other arm being flexible, a yoke carried by the last mentioned arm and projecting toward the first mentioned jaw, and an outstanding jaw carried by said yoke for clamping an article upon the aforesaid jaws.
