CLAUDE H. WILLIAMS, 0F CATAWISSA, PENNSYLVANIA.
WHIP-HOLDER.
Application filed December 3, 1913.
To aZZ whom it may concern Be it known that I, CLAUDE H. WILLIAMs a citizen of the United States, residing a Catawissa, in the county of Columbia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new! and useful Improvements in Whip-Holders, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates 'to whip holders designed to support a whip from its upper end when not in use to prevent drooping and consequent deformation of the whip.
The general object of the present invention is the provision of a device of this character designed for attachment to a vehicle top, and constructed from a single length of flexible material whereby the device can be expeditiously attached to or removed from the vehicle top as occasion may demand.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a device of the above mentioned character which is simple in construction, durable and efficient for the purpose intended.
Vith these and other objects in view which will appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the invention consists in the specific construction and arrangement of parts which will be hereinafter more fully described and pointed out in the appended claim.
In the drawing forming a part of this application, and in which like numerals of reference indicate similar parts in the several views; Figure 1 is a view showing the device in position on the vehicle top; Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the holder; and Fig. 3 is view showing the manner in which the holder is applied to the nut.
The deviceis especially designed for attachment to vehicles, and in the drawing 5 designates a vehicle top, and 6 the brace bar which is connected to the top by the usual pivot bolt 7 and secured by means of the nut 9. The nut as shown in this particular instance is provided with a squared portion and formed with an enlarged circular head 10 which may be nickel-plated or of any other ornamental design.
The holder forming the subject matter of this invention may be constructed of any suitable material, but as shown in the preferred embodiment of the invention, comprises a single length of flexible wire 11, which is bent at 12 to. form a clamp 13 hav- Specification of Letters Patent.

'ng the respective parallel strands, and as hown in this instance they are disposed at ight angles to each other to conform to the r contour of the nut 9, around which the device is adapted to be clamped. The wire is terminally bent at one end to form spaced horizontally disposed strands defining a clip 16, one of the strands being extended beyond the other and bent downwardly at a right angle to the plane of the clip in the formation of the clamp 13. The clip 16 is adapted to receive the upper end of the whip with a View of retaining the same in vertical position when not in use, thus preventing drooping and consequent deformation thereof. The clip 16 projects only a slight distance beyond the enlarged head 10 of the nut, so that when it is in its applied position it is practically unnotioeable. The arm 17 of the clip is curved outwardly to facilitate the insertion of the whip therein. The free end of the wire defining the top side of the clamp is bent back upon itself as at 14; to surround the clip strand 15 at its point of juncture with one of the parallel strands of the clamp, whereby when the whip is positioned within the clip the downward pull will tend to tighten the clamp portion of the device.
By reason of the fact that the holder is formed from flexible material it is manifest that the same may be readily attached to or removed from the vehicle top without removing the nut 9, it being further understood that the clamp 13 may be readily in creased or decreased in size or made in any form to accommodate the various types of nut with which the device is intended to be used in the manner hereinabove described.
It is believed that from the foregoing description the nature and advantages of the invention will be clearly understood without further explanation; therefore the same has been omitted. 1
What I claim is:
A whip holder comprising a single length of wire terminally bent at one end to form spaced horizontally disposed strands defining a clip, one of the strands being extended beyond the other and bent downwardly at a right angle to the plane of the clip, said right angular portion being further bent to provide a clamp having parallel strands, the wire at the termination of the top side whereby When a Whip is positioned in the In testimony whereof I afiix mysignature in presence of two Witnesses.
