UNITED Sra'rns Parent FFICE CATHARINE A. WVORDEN, OF JERSEY CITY, NEW JERSEY.
ABDOMINAL SUPPORTEB.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 283,734, dated August 21, 1883.
v Application filed November 4, 1882. (No modeh) To (ZZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, GATHARINE A. 70R- DEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Jersey City, in. the county of Hudson and State of New J ersey, have inventedcertain new and useful Improvements in Abdominal Supporters, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to abdominal supporters; and it consists in a pad having inclosed in it a spring, to the oppositeends of which are connected straps or hands for attaching the article to a corset or to the person. WVhen the supporter is combined with a corset, separable fastenings are used for connecting the attaching-bands to the article.
The accompanying drawings illustrate the manner of carrying out my invention.
Figure 1 represents a front view, showing the supporter applied to a corset; Fig. 2, an interior view of the pad, showing the shape of the spring.
A represents a body of an ordinary corset, and B the supporter-pad, which is composed of front and back pieces, B E the front piece, B, being usually quilted.
G is a fiat spring, of peculiar shape, inclosed in the pad, this spring being coiled in several coils, one over another, and bent to form eyes 0 c at its outer ends. The spring C be ing placed between the pieces B 13 the pieces are sewed together at their edges, leaving, however, two small openings, 9 one at each end, to allow the straps or hands d d to pass through, and which bands are attached at one end to the eyes 0 c of the spring, and provided with a button-hole at the other end to fasten it to the hip portion of the corset, as shown in Fig. 1. To secure the spring 0 in its proper position in the'pad it is sewed or otherwise iastened at given points at the top and bottom of the same-as, for example, at e e.
connected to the hip portions of the corset by buttons and buttonholes or other, separable fastenings; or the article may be used separately from a corset and be fastened in any suitable manner to the person.
My improved device not only affords a direct support to the abdomen, but by it is secured a lateral elastic support which adjusts itself to any posture of the wearer, and which is a very great desideratum in abdominal supporters.
It is evident my supporters can be made of any suitable material, of any required size, and adapted for either male or female.
In some cases the pad may be provided with a plate, of metal or other similar material, for the purpose of stiffening it, and, if desired, such plate may be perforated for ventilation,- thereby lessening the heat of the pad, the spring being attached to the plate. Different metals, moreover, may be combined in the proper manner and applied to the pad to make an electrical supporter.
, What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is I As an improved article of manufacture, an abdominal supporter consisting of a pad having inclosed in it a spring, the opposite ends of which are connected with straps or hands for attaching the whole to the corset or person, as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
OATHARINE A. WORDEN.
