H. E. ROGERS. ABDOMINAL SUPPORTBR.
No. 433,370. Patented July 29, 1890.

, UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HANNAH E. ROGERS, or PORTLAND, MAINE.
ABDOMINAL SUPPORTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 433,370, dated July 29, 1890. Application filed April 14, 1890. Serial No. 347,798. (No model.)-
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, HANNAH E. ROGERS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Portland, in the county of Cumberland and State liable to occur from gravitation.
The device is more particularly adapted to persons who, from want of sufficient exercise or other cause, develop a tendency toward corpulency.
The invention consists, mainly, in the peculiar structure, the composite body portion or strap-work that surrounds the body of the wearer, the combination of the parts, and, further, in the means by which said body portion is retained in place, all of which is hereinafterfully described, illustrated in the drawin gs, and pointed out in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings, in which similar letters of reference indicate similar parts, Figure 1 represents a perspective view of a device embodying the invention. Fig. 2 represents a front view of the device applied to the body. Figs. 3 and 4 respectively represent rear and side views thereof similarly applied.
Referring to the drawings by letter, A A are similar side bands having the vertical front and rear portions act, respectively. The said bands are of inelastic material, and the rear portions 0/ have horizontal extensions a a at their lower ends.
B B are horizontal elastic bands, which are below and parallel with the inelastic parts of the bands A, and are adapted to rest against the side of the wearer and connect at front and rear the vertical portions a a of the bandsA on each side, which preferably have their ends secured firmly by stitching or otherwise to said portions.
eyelets (Z d in the vertical portions a a of the side bands A, so that when the device is in place it may be laced up from the front, the diameter being adjusted by the rear elastic straps.
Stocking-supporters E E may to the lower edge of the abdominal suporter at suitable points, and will help keep the sup porter in place.
The ends of the horizontal extension a of the rear vertical port-ions a of the side bands are connected by a lacing-strap F, engaging in eyelets f in said ends.
By means of the lacing at front and rear and the buckles, as has been described, the same supporter can be readily adapted to persons of different sizes, which is of great ad vantage in the sale of the goods; also, in gen eral terms, it is only necessary in making these devices for the market to have one form or size for the inelastic part.
It will be noted that the vertical portions a of the inelastic part A are adapted to fit snugly and smoothly against the abdomen almost directly in front, while just at the rear of the hips on the side the vertical said part A give stay and form to the entire structure. Thus these vertical portions are placed at exactly the best points for effective use and precisely where they cannot interfere with the motion of the body, while at the back and opposite to said portions the elastic strap 0, coming above the inelastic horizontal extension a that rests against the body, serves, with the aid of the elastic side straps B, to secure closeness of fit, permit entire freedom in the motion of the body, and at the same time prevents any binding or closeness.
The described supporter has this peculiar advantage of being adjustable by the wearer without the aid of an assistant, even when want of exercise or other causes have pro duced undue corpulency, as the lacing is done be attached portions 0. of
from the front of the supporter, thus having a great advantage over the ordinary supporter opening in the back. In addition to this, the device is so open that it cannot heat the body of the wearer, While at the same time it remains Well in place and supports all the parts of the abdomen in an easy manner, so that the wearer is practically unconscious of any such appliance. The peculiar structure has also this further advantage, that in any motion of stooping or bending there is so much flexibility at the point where any strain comes that the wearer practically sufiers no inconvenience from the device.
I am aware that heretofore devices of this general character and description have been made and used, and I do not assert, therefore, that it is broadly new to use bands, elastics, and lacing for this purpose.
Having described my invention, I claim 1. An abdominal supporter comprising the opposite similar side bands of inelastic mate- .rial, their vertical front and rear portions connected by straps or cords at their ends in front and at the back, and provided with elastic bands which connect the said front and rear portions on the same side, and with the elastic bands adjustably connecting the vertical rear portions of the two side bands, substantially as specified.
2. The herein described abdominal supporter having the verticalinelastic front portions a connected by elastic and inelastic side bands with the rear vertical portions a and the elastic bands 0 and inelastic part a below, the several parts adapted, by means of the lacing D and F, to be fitted to any size of wearer and secured in position, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I at'fix my signature in prescnce of two witnesses.
V HANNAH E. ROGERS.
