To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, GILBERT H. BLAKEs- LEY, of Bristol, in the county of Hartford.

and State of Connecticut, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Garters, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings.

The object of my said invention is to pro duce an article which shall be more comfortable and durable than anything of the kind now in use, and to remove certain objections to the use of garters which have tended to drive them out of common use. Some of these objections are that garters formerly in use have bound the leg of the wearer too tightly, causing mild congestion; they have been difficult of adjustment, and clumsy to place in position and to remove, and these various objections have caused such hard usage of the material as to cause a speedy deterioration and wearing out of the material.

My invention consists of a garter which I describe as follows and represent in the drawings hereto attached:

Figure 1 of the drawings represents a perspective view of the garter, and Figs. 2, 3, and 4 represent detail views showing the fastening uniting the elastic and non-elastic strips.

The rear portion A of the garter is made up of two or more strands of elastic stock. I use preferably the material described in Letters Patent of the United States, No. 411,416, dated September 24, 1889, granted to me. The front portion consists of inelastic tape in two parts, (B) attached to the ends of the elastic stock by rivets (g), forming a part of the clasps used to bind the rubber core and covering together, or other suitable device. The joints thus made by attaching the elastic stock to the ends of inelastic tape are covered by strips of satin E sewed around the same.

To each end of the inelastic stock is attached a part of a hat buckle (D) with a device or devices for adjusting the length of the garter.

Fig. 3 shows the outside of the joint and Fig. 2 the opposite or inside of the joint.

Fig. 1 represents the garter in position upon the leg of the wearer with one strand of elastic stock showing the rubbercore (c) and with the buckle in position in front.

Fig. 4represents the clasp I use to fasten the covering to the rubber core made with a rivet (g) by which the same is attached to the inelastic ends as shown in Figs. 2 and 3. This combined clasp and rivet is made in one piece Vout of sheet metal.

-In use the garter is passed around the leg and fastened by bringing together the two parts of the flat buckle. ,The size of the garter can be adjusted by lengthening or `shortening the ends of inelastic tape, when the garter is on or off the leg at pleasure.

The article herein described affords a garter which takes a rm grasp on the leg and furnishes a sure support for the stocking, and at the same time the elastic stock is of sufficient length and composed of several strands in such a way as to render thev grasp exceedingly mild and easy, especially as the construction is such that the non-elastic part of the garter alone bears upon the muscles of the leg. lThe garter also is fastened by a suitable flat buckle on the ends and can be quickly and easily placed in position on the limb without the inconvenience of drawing the same on over the foot. By using the non-elastic ends for the purpose of adjustment, this is rendered very easy, and the annoyance and injurious effect on the rubber of having the elastic slip when the garter is in use are avoided. By the use of a plurality of material, and aording an opportunity to the air of free access to the leg as herein described, the mild congestion which so frequently follows the wearing of garters of this general description is prevented.

Having thus given a full and complete description of my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is the following:
