SHIRT-COLLAR HOLDER.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 481,425, dated August 23, 1892.

Be it known that I, FRANK L. ROBINSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hartland, in the county of Somerset and State of Maine, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shirt Collar Holders, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.

This invention relates to a shirt-collar stay or holder, and is especially designed for use in connection with the soft rolling collars of neglig shirts.

The objects of the invention are to provide a stay or holder to be used in connection with the above-mentioned class of shirts which will retain the collar substantially fiat upon the shirt and close around the neck, and thereby obviate the tendency of the collar to rise or ride over the coat-collar, the holder being completely covered from view by the coat or vest of the wearer, as will more fully hereinafter appear.

The preferred form of the device is shown in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figures 1 and 2 are respectively front and rear views of the device applied to a shirt, and Fig. 3 a detail perspective View of the holder.

The device consists of a simple tape or strap a of elastic or non-elastic material, having attached to its ends spring-clasps b of any suitable construction. These clasps are preferably adjustably secured to the ends of the tape, the ends of the tape being passed through loops on the clasp and turned back and adj ustably secured to the body of the tape by suitable buckles b. At a point midway between the ends of the tape is attached a clasp c, which is adjustable along the tape in any suitable manner. This clasp preferably has a frictional adjustment on the tape, the latter being folded or rolled and passed through a small round loop or ring 0' on the rear end of the clasp, as shown.

Connecting the two parts of the tape at a suitable distance from the intermediate clasp c is an adjustable device d, which is preferably in the form of a double loop, as shown.

The rings or loops of this connection are made small, so that the tapes will be folded or rolled in passing through them,the friction of the folded tapes being sufficient to hold the loops at any point desired.

The application of this device is shown in Figs. 1 and 2. The clasp c is attached to the lower edge of the rear of the shirt-collar, the two parts of the tape are carried around under the respective arms of the wearer, and their clasps are attached to the front lower corners of the collar. The sliding double loop is adjusted along the tapes, so that it will come between the shoulder-blades of the wearer, as shown. The advantage of making the clasps and connection adjustable is that the device may be readily adjusted to suit different-sized persons. It will be observed .that both the back and the front parts of the collar will be held closely and neatly in place, so that it will fit the neck of the wearer and be prevented from raising up over the coat of the wearer. The comfortable flexibility of the collar will not in the least be affected.

The device is extremely simple and may be manufactured at slight cost, as is evident.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. A shirt-collar holder comprising a doubled tape having a clasp secured to each of its free ends and a clasp secured to its doubled portion and a device connecting the parts of the tape between its doubled portion and its free ends, substantially as described.

2. A shirt-collar stay comprising a doubled tape having a clasp adj ustably secured to each of its ends and a clasp secured to the doubled portion of the tape and a sliding loop connecting the parts of the tape between its doubled portion and free ends, substantially as described.
