MARGARET A. WOODS, OF SOMERVILLE, MASSACHUSETTS.
AABDOMINAL SUPPORTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 522,394, dated July 3, 1894. Applicationfiled January 9,1893. SerialN0-457fl14- (roman) To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, MARGARET A. WooDs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Somerville, in the county of Middlesex, in the State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and- Abdominal Waist, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being a part of this specification, in explaining 1ts nature.
The invention comprises a waist shaped to fit the lower portion of the body, and having short leg sections by which it is held down in place, combined with truss pads attached to or formed upon the front of the waist which 1s of a shape to receive them, all as hereinaf- In the drawings: Figure 1 is a view in per; spective of the waist. Fig.2 is a View in rear elevation thereof.
The waist is made of any desired number ofpieces and stayed and corded where desired. It is open at the back and is made adjustable by means of straps-a, secured to one edge of the waist at the opening, and buckles a secured at the other. The sides of the waist are extended downward sufficiently to form the short leg sections a and each-of these leg sections is made adjustable by means of a strap a and buckle a, the waist being held in place to the body, not only by the straps a, but also by the leg sections and straps a which tie the waist down to the legs, the straps extending around the legs (see Fig. 2). The inner side of the front ofthe waist near pad or pads, B. These pads may be of any suitable shape, and they are preferably made of hair and covered with an open, loosely Woven material like Turkish toweling, to provide flexibility and ventilation. The lower lined with a. similar material, as well as the sections of the leg straps which bear against the legs. In the rear of the waist there are set in gores or gussets O O, which may or may not be elastic, and which permit the necessary bending of the leg sections in relation to the waist arising from a change in the position of the wearer.
The waist thus formed is securely held to the body in such a manner as to provide a support for the same, and also a support for the truss pads, the lower section of the waist and the pads being held down in place bythe portions of the waist which extend around the legs; and the gussets O, 0', permit the leg section, strapped to the legs, to move and yet hold the truss pads firmly in position.
It will be observed that the front section of the waist is extended'downward and is di- 1 vided, and that the lower ends of the divided section are held down by parts with which they are connected, or into which they extend, namely, the leg sections or straps, and that it is this portion of the waist to which the truss pads are secured. It will also be observed that the rear of the waist has a large opening, and it is from this opening that the gusset or gores extend, see Fig. 2. I prefer to interpose chamois skin between the hair of the pads and the Turkish toweling.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States- The abdominal waist herein described having the main or body section, provided with truss pads extending along both sides and across the top of the front opening, and the leg sections, each provided with straps whereby the said pads may be held firmly in position, and the gores or gussets O, C for permitting the leg sections to move without disturbing the position of the pads, substantially as
