' A I. FRIEDMAN.
CORSET AND ABDOMINAL SUPPORTED.
Patented Oofn. 12,1897.
UNITED, STATES PATENT ()nrrcn...
ISAAC FRIEDMAN, O F CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
CORSET AND ABDOMINAL SUPPORTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 591,626, dated October 12, 1897.
Application filed January 7,1897.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ISAAC FRIEDMAN, a resident of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combined Corset and Abdominal Supporter, of which the following, when taken in connection with the drawings accompanying and forming a part hereof, is a full andcomplete description, sufficient to enable those skilled in the art to which it pertains to understand, make, and use the same. i
The invention relates to articles of dress designed to be worn for the preservation or the acquiring of a certain form, and also to articles worn for the support of certain parts or portions of the bodythat is to say, the invention relates both to corsets and to abdominal supports; and the object of the invention is to obtain a combined corset and abdominal support which can be readily fitted to the form of the person wearing it and which can thereafter without changing such fitting be easily taken off and replaced in the manner in which an ordinary corset is taken off and replaced in position on the person of the wearer.
In the drawings referred to as forming a part of this invention, Figure 1 is a side elevation of the corset part or portion of the device embodying the invention and a front plan view of the abdominal supporter, such abdominal supporter being secured to the corset part in an adjustable manner; and Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the combined corset and abdominal supporter in their proper relative positions when adjusted on a wearer.
A reference-letter applied to designate a given part is used to indicate such part throughout both figures of the drawings wherever the same appears.
A is a corset, which may be of the ordinary construction, with a part thereof cutaway on lines 0 O B B, respectively-that is, the corset is cut away on a line extending substantially horizontally from hip to hip above the abdomen and on a line extending substantially perpendicularly down over the hips from such horizontal line.
D is the part of the corset which extends from hip to hip of the wearer, across the back, such part D being obtained by the cut- Serial No. 618,246. (No model.) I
ting away of the corset on lines'B B and O O, as described.
E E are the ordinary front fasteners of the corset, and F F the lacing-strings thereof.
G G G are straps secured at one of their ends, respectively, to the part D of the corset, and at the other end to the abdominal supporter H. When straps G G G are not constructed to be adj ustable in reference to length, such straps are made of elastic material.
g is a connecting-strip between the straps G G G on one side of the corset, interposed between such straps and the abdominal supporter H, such connecting-strip g having fasteners thereon engaging with corresponding fasteners on the adjacent edge or end of the abdominal supporter.
I I I are fasteners on corset A, adjacent to the horizontal line B thereof, and J J are corresponding fasteners on the upper edge of the abdominal supporter H, engaging with fasteners I I L'respectively.
. K K K (indicated by dotted lines in Fig.1) are fasteners on connecting-strip g.
L L L are fasteners on the free end of abdominal supporter ILengageable with the fasteners K K K on strip g, and when the corset and abdominal supporter H are in position on the wearer fasteners'K K K are engaged with fasteners L L L. When, as is by me preferred, the straps G G G are made adjustable in length, ordinary buckles, as M M- M, may
be interposed between the two parts into which such straps G G G are respectively divided. I prefer to place elastic webbing N N N in the abdominal supporter H, as is well illustrated in the drawings, although such elastic webbing is not an essential feature thereof. lVhen elastic webbing is used, it should be perforated, as at n 'n n n n, to permit, but not induce, perspiration of the wearer. Elastic webbing N is secured in place by stitching O O.
P P P are strengthening-strips, which may or may not be used, as preferred, in the construction of the abdominal supporter H.
Q Q are straps adjustably joined together by the buckle R. The ends of the straps Q Q not connected together by buckle R or by some other equivalent adjusting device are secured to the abdominal supporter H. Straps The manner of putting on the wearer the 5 combined corset and abdominal supporter embodying my invention is: The corset having been fitted to the person of such wearer by means of lacings'F F F, fasteners E E E are engaged in the ordinary way of engaging g The straps G G G, which are connected at one end to part D of the corset-fastenings.
corset and at the other end to one end of the abdominal supporter, are then adjusted so that when the abdominal supporter is secured to the corset by the fasteners I I I and J J J such abdominal supporter will come in proper position on the abdomen of the wearer. The straps G G on the other half of the corset are then properly adjusted, and the fasteners K K K on connecting-strip g are engaged with fasteners L L L on the abdominal supporter. WVhere straps Q Q are used, they are properly adjusted by buckle R.
To take the combined corset and abdominal supporter off the person, it is merely necessary to release fasteners K K K and L L L,
fasteners I I I and J J J, and fasteners E E E.
1. In a combined corset and abdominal sup- 1 porter, a corset cut away forward of perpendicular lines on the sides and below a horizo'ntal line on the waist thereof, straps attached at one end thereof to the corset so as i to extend forward from the perpendicular edges respectively, a strip connecting together one end of the straps on one of the sides of the corset, fasteners on such strip and on the corset, in combination with an abdominal supporter, attached at one end thereof to adjacent ends of the straps on one side of the corset, fasteners on the other end of the abdominal supporter, and fasteners on the upper edge thereof engaging with the fasteners on the corset and on the strip, respectively, whereby it may be removably sccured to thecor'set; substantially as described.
2. In a combined corset and abdominal sup- I porter, a corset cut away forward of perpendicular lines on the sides thereof and below a horizontal line on the waist thereof, adj ustable straps secured at one of their ends, respectively, to the corset so as to extend forward from the perpendicular edges thereof, in combination with-an abdominal supporter attached at one of its ends to theendsof adjacent straps on one of the sides of the corset and at the other end thereof removably at- 'tached to the adjustable straps on the other side of the corset by separable fasteners interposed between such abdominal supporter and the straps at such end, and separable fasteners at the "upper edge of such abdominal supporter and on the corset, by which "such abdominal supporter is removably at tached thereto; substantially as described.
