Application July 21, 1955, Serial No. 523,503
1 claim. (c1. 132-83) I f My invention relates to containers and particularly to containers for cosmetics and cosmetic implements.
One purpose is to provide a container for a plurality of individual cosmetic containers and having means for removably securing certain cosmetic implements therein. Y
j Another purpose is to 'provide a container having a particular formation facilitating its use in the hand of the user.
. Other purposes willrappear from time to time in thecourse of the specification and claim. l
s. I illustrate my invention more or less diagrammatically in the accompanying drawings wherein:
Figure 1 isa top view, with parts broken away.Y y '.'Figure 2 is a side view in partial cross-section, on the 1ine2`2 of Figure 1. l
Figure 3 is a perspective view of a variant form of my invention.
'j Figure 4 is a top view with parts broken away of' the device. illustrated in Figure 3.Y
11 Figure 5 is an end view in cross-section on the line 5---5v of Figure 4.
Like parts are indicated by like symbols throughout the specification and drawings.
Referring n ow to the drawings and particularly to Figures land 2, the numeral 1 generally indicates the lower portion of my device which comprises a generally box-like structure having va bottom wall 2, a curved side wall 3 and is generally upwardly open. A hinge 4 may bejpositioned along the upper edge of a somewhat straight rear portion 5 of the 'side wall 3. A cover 6 may be hingedly secured to th'e'sid'e wall portion 5 for rotation toward a rear position such as that illustrated in dotted lines in Figure 2.
The side wall 3 may have oppositely curved portions 10, 11, diverging from opposite edges of the straight portion 5 and hinge 4. Curved portions 12, 13 of the side wall 3 may converge inwardly from the outer ends of the curved portions 10, 11 and may join an outwardly oiset generally rounded projection 15 of the side wall 3 as indicated at the reversed curved portions 17, 18 of the side wall 3. A clip member 20 may be connected to the side wall 3 at the outermost portion of the projection l5 and may cooperate with a securing member 21 on the cover 6 to retain the cover in normally closed position.
A mirror 25 may be connected to the inner or under surface of the cover 6 as indicated clearly in Figure 2 and may have its reilecting surface directed outwardly from the cover 6 to be visible to the user when the cover 6 is in the dotted line position illustrated in Figure 2.
A cosmetic and implement receiving structure may tit within and be secured within the curved wall 3 and may rest upon the bottom wall 2 of the container portion 1. This receiving structure may comprise a supporting edge wall 30 and may have a plurality of upwardly open well portions 31 spaced along the vside wall portions 10, 5 and 11 as best seen in Figure l. The wells 31 may, for example, be circular in lateral cross-section, A generally rectangular, centrally located well 32 may be positioned between two of the wells 31, as illustrated in Figure l, and may have secured to the bottom thereof a plurality of upwardly open implement-receiving and holding clip members 33, 34, 35. l illustrate, for example,
a cosmetic pencil 33aheld between a pair of clip mem` bers 33, a cosmetic brush 34a held between a pair ofA clip members 34, and a third cosmetic implement 35a held by a pair of clip members 35. Positioned within the generally rounded projection 15 is a well 40 which may be provided, for example, to contain face powder. As
illustrated in Figures 1` and 2, the well 40 may be gen-y erally circular and may follow the outline of the rounded projection 15. A cover'41 is provided for the well 40' and'is hingedly secured thereto as indicated generally at 42. A
It will be understood that the wells 31 may have downwardly inserted therein containers for cosmetics. Iv illustrate for example, five such wells 31, each of which may 1have positionedv therein individual containers for a different cosmeticV material. Similarly, the well 32 may contain a vvariety of cosmetic implements to suitthe de-` sires ofthe user. v While the well 40 is described as preferably containing face powder, it will be understood thatA various cosmetics may be contained therein without departing from the nature and scope of my invention.
`Referring now to ^Figures 3-5, I illustrate a variant form of my invention. Referring particularly to Figurel 3, the numeral generally-indicates a triple-section container for cosmetics and cosmetic implements comprising a lower base portion 51, a central container portion 52 and an upper coverf portion S3. TheA cover 53 may have secured -to the inner surface thereof a mirror 54' having its reectingvsurfa'ce directed vdownwardly orV outwardly from the cover 53 so as to be -visible to the user when the cover53 is in raised position. Asbest seen in'Figure 5, the cover secured along a rear edge of vthecentral section 52 as indicated at 55 and the central section 52 ishingedly4 the bottom wall thereof, isa support 6 3 which carries;` a plurality of dividerwalls generally indicated by-:the
numeral 64. As indicated best in Figure 4, the divider walls 64 serve to create separate upwardly open wells covering approximately half of the central section 52. The walls 65 thus created may have placed therein a plurality of smaller containers having a variety of cosmetic materials therein. The remaining portion of the central vsection 52, as illustrated in the drawings, the forward portion, may be suitably divided. I show for example one longitudinally extending divider 70, into separate compartments to receive a plurality of individual cosmetic materials. The well 71 created by the divider and the forward portion of the support 63 and dividers 64 may have clip means 72 therein into which a toothbrush 73, for example, may be inserted and held. A forward wall 75 of the central section 52 may have a plurality of clip means 76, 77 into which a variety of implements 78, 79 may be inserted and held for easy removal.
The lower or base section 51 may similarly have dividers, such as the divider 80 illustrated in Figure 3, to segmentalize the upwardly open base section 51 within its bottom wall 81 and four side walls indicated generally by the numeral 82.
A second rnirror 85 may be secured to the lower or bottom wall 60 of the central section 52 so as to'be visible to the user when the section 52 is raised into Patented Feb. 1s, 195s,
53 isy yhingedlytop 53 and central section 52 to hold the top S3 in normally closed position on and against the central section 52 and a clip means 91 may similarly be secured to a lower portionfof thefeentral 'section 52 IandY the :base :section T51 to hold :the central section 52v-innormally closed-,position against the -basefSL Thusthe-uscrmayfchoose toseparate the clasp 90 and raise the cover,53using fthe-mirror secured thereto# and the cosmetics and implements-from the central section 52. -In-thealternative, the user may choose to separate .theclasp'91'and` raise the central section 52V and th'e cover-53 together, utilizing the mirror 85 which is thusibroughtf into: view and' materials from the base section 51.
"It will be vunderstood vthat the wells- 65, 71v and 75. as above described, maybe suitably formed in fthe base section 51 without departing from the .nature and scope of my invention. Similarly, the device of'Figur'es 3-5 may be of 2a size useable on a dressing table or maybe made small enough to be carried in a ladys purse.
It will be realized that, whereas, we Vhave describedy and illustrated a practical and operative device, nevertheless many changes may be made in the size, shape, number and disposition ofi parts without departing from the spirit of our invention. We therefore wish our description and drawings Ato be taken asin a broad sense illustrative -or diagrammatic,`rather than as limiting' us to our precise showing.
. The use-and' operation of my vinvention 'are as follows: The device illustrated in Figures 1 and 2 may be easily held withinA the hand of the user, the projection being directed `along the `palm or base of the hand, the'lingers being free to grasp the generally oval-shaped remainder of the container, the curved sections 10, 11, 12'and 13 being easily held between the fingers. With thelcover raised as shown in'dotted lines in Figure 2, the user may select the appropriate implement from the well 32 and may'employ cosmeticsv from any of the Wells v31 or the well 40 as she desires. The user is thus provided with what is, in effect, 'antartistsV palette which she Vmay use, much inthe manner of artists, in applying cosmetics.
Referring to lthe variant form of my invention, as illustrated in Figures 3 5,l I provide a type of combination of vanity and `cosmetic case which the 'user':may, for example, use either at home or at almost-any time, depending Iupon the size ofthe container. Since'thel container :illustrated in Figures 3-5 `is in eifect-in three( sections, a-'greater amountpof materials andfitemsmay-1be contained therein.- The ruser may,` for exampl'eyplacefa plurality lofcontainers'ol varying cosmetics `inthe iwells *65 and a variety of implements in the wells 71, 75, the
lower or base section 51 may contain supplementary items, including, for example, tissues and additional instruments. Materials described as being in central section 52 and base section 51 may, of course, be reversed without departing from the nature and scope of my invention. Sincera-mirror is provided against the under surface of the cv'e'riSSand a second mirror is provided against fthe' under surface "of the central section 52, it is clear that the user may utilize cosmetics, implements or other 'materialsfro'm 'either"the central section 52 or the base section S1 without having' to'open both clasps 90, 91.
I claim:
In a cosmetic container, an upwardly open case having a substantially flat bottom wall, a cover for said case hingedly mounted thereon along the rear edge thereof andshaving a substantially-dat top wall, said case.4 and covenhaving a generally ellipticalrperiphery vand'anf'outwardly-Ldirected projectionpo'sitioned, generally centrally of the forward edge thereof andin:generalalignment'with said hinged mounting, the outerv portionof saidrfprojection having a generally circular edge, said outer portion beingA joined with said forward edgev of said' caseaand cover lby oppositelyv curved 4portions extendingv laterallyiin opposite directions from said outer portion, said case having -a fsupportlpositioned lentirely therewithin, said support extending throughoutfsaid case and vof substantially-the configuration thereof, said supporthaving` a plurality of individual wells spaced along saidhingeand along the-rear `curved edge of said elliptical central-portion adapted to receivea plurality of individual cosmetic materials, said support having a larger wellY positioned within the area of said Iprojection and a central wellsin said support positioned between said wells .along` said hinge -and .fsaidwellain said projection, saidcentralrwell having secured to the bottom wall vthereof a plurality :of upwardly open securing means Vadapted to .receive-and hold a plurality of cosmetic instruments.
