FRITZ Om, E8, 1955 APPARATUS FOR HOLDING COMPACT PLATFORM IN POSITION Filed OCT.- 9, 1951 3 Sheets-Sheet 3 United States Patent APPARATUS FOR HOLDING COMPACT PLATFORM IN POSITION Carl H. Fritz, Elgin, Ill., assignor to Illinois Watch Case Co., a corporation of Illinois Application October 9, 1951, Serial No. 250,415 Claims. (Cl. 132-83) This invention relates to a cosmetics case, especially of the type known as a compact. More particularly, it relates to a means for positioning a platform in a compact.
It is an object of this invention to produce a compact in which the platform is maintained in position in one of the cover sections without deforming the section. Another object of the invention is to provide a compact in which a tube for holding lipstick serves as a means for positioning a platform in one of the cover sections of the compact. A further object of this invention is to provide a cosmetics case in which a powder carrying platform is maintained in position by a cylindrical member located behind the platform on the interior of the cover section.
Other features and advantages of this invention will be apparent from the following specification and the drawings, in which:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a novel cosmetics case in the form of a stylized bird in which the device of this invention is incorporated.
Fig. 2 is an exploded perspective view of the various elements of the compact illustrating the manner in which the platform is maintained in position by a cylindrical member;
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of a cosmetics case incorporating this invention with the cover opened;
Fig. 4 is a front view of the case showing the birds head which is also used as a handle in removing lipstick from its container;
Fig. 5 is a sectional view taken along the lines 55 of Fig. 6 showing the means for positioning the platform;
Fig. 6 is a partial sectional view taken along the lines 6-6 of Fig. 4 showing the platform properly positioned and a lipstick container in place;
Fig. 7 is a partial plan view of the device showing the lipstick container in place; and
Fig. 8 is a view similar to Fig. 7 except that the lipstick container is partially removed from the case.
Cosmetics cases or compacts of the type normally used consist of two relatively flat mating sections hinged together and frequently spring-biased so that when a catch is tripped the sections readily open up under the urging of the biasing spring to reveal a mirror. One of the mating sections contains a partition known as a platform which has a hinged door below which a powder compartment is located. Normally the platform is maintained in position in the mating cover section by deforming the section around the edges of the platform. In most cases this deformation is not undesirable, but in certain cases it is desirable to position the platform within the section without deforming the section in order to hold the platform in place. This invention is directed toward a novel means for effecting this result.
The cosmetics case shown in Fig. 1 has a pair of mating sections 10 and 11. These mating sections open up when a thumb catch 12 is tripped. The compact shown is in the form of a stylized bird and in the embodiment illustrated the head of the bird indicated at 13 serves as a handle for withdrawing a lipstick container 14.
2,720,884 Patented Oct. 18, 1955 Fig. 3 shows the compact of Fig. l in open position. When the catch 12 is tripped a biasing spring 15 cooperates with a pair of hinges 16 to open the compact to where the cover sections are separated by about a angle, the hinges 16 serving as stop members. The cover section 10 has a mirror 17 on its interior. The cover section 11 includes a platform 18 as well as a hinged cover 19 for a pill compartment 20.
The paltform 18 includes a door member 21 which can swing outward around a hinge 22 under the control of a slide catch 23. When the catch 23 is displaced outward the door 21 opens to reveal a storage compartment for face powder.
The cover section 11 is thicker than the cover section 10 in order that it may serve as a container for a lipstick. As best shown in Figs. 2 and 6 the section 11 has an aperture 25 through which a tube 26 extends. The tube 26 is held in position on the interior of the section 11 by means of a bolt 27 and a nut 28 in cooperation with an interior support member 29. The support member 29 may be soldered, brazed or welded into the position shown in Fig. 2 and the nut 28 may be permanently attached to the support member 29 by solder or similar means. The tube 26 is adapted to accommodate the lipstick case 14.
The underside of the platform 18 has a guide and holding member 30 mounted thereon. The guide member 30 serves to position the platform 18 in the cover section 11 and, in combination with the tube 26, to lock it in place.
In assembling the apparatus shown in Fig. 2, the platform 18 is positioned within the cover section 11 and the tube 26 is then inserted through the guide 30. The bolt 27 is then tightened through the nut 28 thereby positioning both the tube 26 and the platform 18 by a single holding means. The platform 18 is then held very firmly and the necessity of deforming the cover section 11 in order to position the platform 18 has been avoided. At the same time, the platform 18 may be easily removed by removal of the bolt 27 and withdrawal of the tube 26.
For further details of the construction of the compact disclosed in this application reference may be had to the following copending applications: Irelan Serial Nos. 250,427, 250,428, now Patent No. 2,688,814, dated September 14, 1954, and 250,429 and Vogelrnan Serial No. 250,403, all filed October 9, 1951.
While I have shown and described certain embodiments of my invention, it is to be understood that it is capable of many modifications. Changes, therefore, in the construction and arrangement may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as disclosed in the appended claims.
I claim:

2. In a case of the character described for carrying cosmetics: first and second mating sections engageable to define a chamber for carrying cosmetics; a platform nesting in said first section; an elongated tube in said first section, the axis of which is substantially parallel to the plane of the surface of said platform, said tube being positioned immediately adjacent the underside of the sur face of said platform which is exposed when said case is open; means for fastening said tube in said first section; and a U-shaped guide attached to the underside of said platform through which said tube passes whereby said platform is held in said first section.
3. In a case of the character described for carrying cosmetics: a platform nesting in one of the sections of which the case is composed; a lipstick tube positioned interiorly of said'one section adjacent the unexposed side of said platform andfixedly held in said one section; and a guide connected to said platform, said tube passing through said guide whereby said tube serves to position said platform in said one section 4. In a cosmetics case of the character described: two mating sections one of which is of thickness sufficient to accommodate a lipstick tube; a tube for holding a lipstick in said one section; mounting means for maintaining said tube in position in said one section said tube being in register with an opening in the side of said one section; a platform, the surface of which is parallel to said tube; and a guide attached to said platform and through which said tube passes whereby said platform is positioned in said section.
5. A womans cosmetics compact of the character described, comprising: two hinged mating sections having 20 level mating surfaces, one of said sections being thick enough to accommodate a lipstick tube and having a support member extending upwardly therefrom; a tube for holding a lipstick in said section, said tube being parallel to the mating surface; means for maintaining said tube in position, said means comprising a bolt attaching the end of said tube to said support member; a platform, the surface of which adjoins, and is parallel to, said mating surface; and a guide attached to the tube side of said platform through which said tube passes whereby said platform is positioned in said section.
