Description
Jul 15' .1924.
s. MORRISON LATCH FOR VANITY CASES I Filed Jan. 25 {192;
Patented July 15, 1924.
UNITED STATES SIMON MORRISON, OF BROOKLYN, NEU YORK.
LATCH FOB VANITY CASES.
Application filed January 25, 1923.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SIMON MomusoN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Latches for Vanity Cases, of which the following is a specifica tion.
My said invention relates to a latch for a vanity case, here shown as being of similar type to that in my copending application No. 615,445 of even date herewith. It is an object of the invention to provide a latch which shall be simple and convenient and which shall render the case more convenient in use. Cases and boxes of the general type of my invention are well-known, in which a cover fits tightly over a container and is held in place by friction, which is sometimes increased by beads or other structural modifications. One objection to such boxes is that they are difficult to open. By the use of my invention they may be made to fit loosely so that they can be opened very easily after the latch is disconnected.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, which are made a part hereof and on which similar reference characters indicate similar parts,
Figure 1 is an elevation showing my device on a case of the character described,
Figure 2 an elevation of the box turnedsidewise and having a part broken away to show the internal construction, and
Figure 3 is a detail of the latch, V
In the drawings reference character 10 in- .dicates the lower compartment of a vanity case, said compartment being usually provided with means for holding cosmetics such as face powder, rouge, etc. An intermediate compartment is indicated at 11 also adapted to contain cosmetics or a mirror or both and may be provided with a mirror.
Serial No. 615,444.
The intermediate compartment carries a double latch structure 13 one point of which is adapted to engage a lip on the lower compartment formed by punching out a part indicated at 14 and the other is adapted to engage a lip on the cover formed by punching out a pait indicated at 15. A spring 16 serves to hold the latch structure in its outer position and a thumb piece 17 is provided which projects through an opening in the intermediate member 11 and can be pressed against the surface to bend the spring and remove both the latch points from said lips.
Having thus fully described my said inventon, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. A vanity case comprising an intermediate compartment, a cover therefor, a lower compartment nesting with the intermediate compartment, and a double latch on the intermediate compartment adapted to engage the lower compartment and the cover for holding them in place, substantially as set forth.
2. A vanity case comprising a lower compartment, an intermediate compartment, a cover for the latter, a double latch carried by the intermediate compartment adapted to engage the cover and the lower compartment, a spring for holding said latch in place, and a thumbpiece for depressing the latch to free the cover and the bottom compartment therefrom, substantially as set forth.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal at New York, New York, this 23d day of January, A. D. nineteen hundred and twenty-three.v
