Description

(NoModel.) W. A. LAVBRTY.
SUSPENDBRS.
No. 276,834.' Patented May 1,1883.V Y
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM A. LAVE'RTY, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
susPENnERs.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 276,834, dated May 1, 1883.
Application tiled March 16, 1883.
To all 'whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM A. LAVERTY, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, have invented certain Improvements in Suspenders, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to preVentthe rapid wearing out of the strips ot' leather or fabric where-by the webs ot Suspenders are secured to the usual metal rings or loops interposed between the shoulder straps and the waist-straps; and this object Iattain in the manner which I will now proceed to describe, reference being had to the accom pauying drawings, in which- Figure l is a perspective view of sufficient of'a pair of Suspenders to ,illustrate my invention, and Fig. 2 an enlarged vertical section.
A A represent part ot' the shoulder-straps of a pair of Suspenders; B B, part of the rear waist-straps, and D the metallic loop connecting them, the upper portion ofthe loop being contained within the folded strip a, of leather or fabric, secured to the straps A, and the lower portion ot' the loop being contained within a similar folded strip, a, secured to the' straps B. This is an ordinary means of connecting the straps; but owing to the wear and strain of the metal loop on the strips a the latter soon become worn through or torn out, and the suspenders must be discarded. In order to prevent this rapid destruction of the strips a, I employ a washer, b, of sheet metal or-otherinaterial calculated to resist wear, this washer beine,` introduced betweenthe folded strip a and the loop D, as shown in Fig. 2, so as to prevent the contact of said strip with the loop. The washers are prefertNo model.)
ably made of sheet Inetal bent into U form, as shown, so that` they can be readily applied to the loop before fitting the folded strip a thereto. i y
I am aware that strengtheniiig-i'iieces have been applied to the outside of the strips a,- but the pieces, when so applied, must be much larger that the washers b which I employ, and means for securing the pieces in place must be employed, whereas the loop itself serves to retain in their proper position the washers which I use. Greater freedom of Inovement ot' the parts is also permitted, as there is not the same amount of friction between the loop D and washer b as there would be between the loop and the leather or fabric composing the strip a.
Rings may be employed instead of the loop shown, and at the front ends of the suspenders the ring or loop may be secured to the waist-straps only in the manner shown, the upper portion of said ring or loop being adaptcd to a hook on thev buckle of the shoulderstrap.
I claim as my invention- The combination ot' the ring or loop D and shoulder or waist straps of a pair ot' suspenders, with the folded strip a and the washer b interposed between said folded strip and the ring or loop, as set forth. V
In testimony whereotlhavesigned my name to this specification in the presence of two subsorbing witnesses.
WM. A. LAVERTY.
