Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OEEICE.
GEORGE BORS'I, OF ROCHESTER, NEW YORK.
SCOOP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 268,452, dated December 5, 1882.
Application filed September 27, 1882.
(No model.)
lo all whom it may concern: ,f
Beit known that I, GEORGE BoRs'r, a citizen of the United States, residing at Rochester, in thecounty of Monroe and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Scoops; and Ido hereby declare that the following is afull, clear, and exact description ot' the same, reference being Vscoops, the objects thereof being to provide a scoop that will be at once cheap, strong, and
light in its construction, and from the nature t. .www
of its composition cannot tear, split, break, or rust, these being the great objections to scoops in which the blade or body thereof is made from wooden or sheet-metal substances; and the invention consists in forming the blade or body of scoops from a composition known as vulcanized fiber,77 as hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, A represents the blade or body portion of a scoop composed ofvulcanized ber attached in any suitable manner to a head, B, preferably formed of lightwood, having connected thereto a handle, C. By forming the blade or body portion ot vulcanized fiber I produce a scoop that is very light in weight and at the same time possessing great strength, the density of the material employed rendering the article extremely durable, as little or no perceptible Wearis incident to its constant use, and from the low cost of this material the scoop can be manufactured and sold .much cheaper than wooden or metallic articles of alike character.
Wooden scoops have been found objectionable from their liability to Warp and split, while sheetmetal scoops become bent and rusty, and are liable to become punctured by nails or other unyielding substances in barrels or boxes, thereby soon wearing out and becoming useless. Scoops having steel blades, while being` strong, and to a certain extent more durable than Wooden or sheet-metal articles of a like character, are objectionable on account of their heaviness, and, in common with those composed of sheet metal, are easily aifectcd by rust, thus requiring flequent cleaning in order to prevent discoloration and damage to the goods in which they are used.
This material, known as vulcanized fiber, being subjected during its manufacture to a great pressure. is necessarily a dense and hard substance, and will notdeteriornte by age, but rather improve by seasoning, and being tough andstrong willsustain pressure Wilhoutchange `of shape orinjury, and being a fibrous composition cannot rust., Consequently a scoop made therefrom willof a necessity last longer, be lighterofweight, and moreeasily handled than those made from the materials commonly ernployed, and at the same time be manufactured and sold at a less cost.
Having now fully described my invention, WhatI claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is i As an improved article of manufacture, a scoop in which the blade or bodyis constructed of or formed from vulcanized fiber, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony `that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my nalnein the presence of two witnesses.
Y GEORGE BORSE.
