Patented 'Aug v8, 1893.
UNITED STATES l PATENT OFFICE.
ELZIE BLAND HAZEL, OF ORANGE MILLS, FLORIDA.
HOE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 502,720, dated August 8, 1893.
Application filed November 28, 1392. Serial No. 453,379. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ELZIE BLAND HAZEL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Orange Mills, in the county of Putnam and State of Florida, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hoes; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to certain improvements in hoes and consists in providing the blade of a hoe on its rear side with a sharpened iin extending centrally down from the top to the bottom of the blade. The object of this fin is to enable a hoe so constructed to produce at one blow or stroke the same result that would require two blows of an ordinary hoe not provided with a fin, as the fin separates the clod and cuts any obstruction when the hoe is prized up.
The particular construction of my improved hoe I will nowproceed to point out, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective of the hoe; and Fig. 2 a side elevation.
Referring to said drawings, A represents the blade ofthe hoe which may be of any de.- sired form; B, the eye or socket in which the handle is inserted, and C a fln formed on 'the rear side of the blade and extending centrallyr from the top to the cutting edge of the blade, said fin having a sharpened cutting edge and tapering from the edge or top of the blade to a point at the cutting edge of said blade. The eye, blade and fin are cast integral with each other. This construction not only accomplishes the objects heretofore set forth but also enables the blade to be made much lighter and thinner and increases its cutting qualities, the fin acting as a reinforce for said blade, thus giving greater strength with the same weight of material as is used in ordinary hoes of the same size.
My improved hoe is especially adapted to be used in cleaning up rough lands.
Having thus described my invention, What I claim is- A hoe provided on its rear side with alongitudinal central cutting iin having a sharp'- ened cutting edge, said tin extendingfrom the eye of the hoe to the cutting edge of the blade and tapering from said eye to the edge of said blade, substantially as shown and described for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof Iaflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
