Description

L.l EDDY;
Knives.
Patented July 22,1373.
AM Mami/mammie co. N.Y(osaamvs Prepagas) v UNITED STATES PATENT I LABEN EDDY, OF TAUNTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPROVEMENT IN KNIVES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 140,997, dated July 22, 1873; application filed June 25, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LABEN EDDY, of Taunton, of the county of Bristol, of the State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Knives or Cutlery; and do hereby declare the same to be fully described in the following specification and represented in the accompanying drawings, of which- Figure 1 is a side elevation, Fig. 2 an edge elevation, and Fig. 3 a longitudinal section, of a knife blade, handle, and bolster formed and connected in accordance with my invention. Fig. 4 is a side view of the blade and handle as they appear fitted together preparatory to the bolster being cast or founded up on them.
In carrying out my invention I construct the handle A, at its end next the blade, with a recessed or grooved tenon, a, the groove or grooves of which are shown at b b; and I also provide the blade B, near its junction with the tang C, with one or more recesses or holes, c, arranged in or through the blade, and upon or around such recessed or holed part of the blade and the -recessed or grooved tenon I cast or found the bolster D by means of a suitable mold properly applied to the handle and blade. Furthermore, I make the bolster so as not only to embrace the lower part of the blade on its two opposite sides, but to extend some distance up against the back of the blade7 as shown at d, in order not only to better support the blade, but to constitute arest for the thumb or forefinger of a person while using the knife. Again, in order that the back of the'part d may be even, or about'so, with the back of the blade, I notch or recess the blade from the tang upward to the height to which the part d is to project, such beingl as shown at c.
The bolster so made extends into or through the blade, and about the tenon, and into its recess or groove or recesses or grooves, and by so doing connects the blade and handle firmly together.
I make no claim to a knife provided with a bolster to its handle and blade. j
I claim as my invention as followsthat is to say:
1. The bolster, provided with the thumb or linger rest or projection d, and made to enr brace the blade on opposite sides of it, as specified.
2. The blade, provided with the recess c, in combination with the bolster furnished with the projection d, extended into such recess and on opposite sides of the blade, substantially as specified.
3. The handle A, provided with the recessed or grooved tenon a, in combination with the blade B, recessed or holed, as described, and with a bolster, D, cast on and into said blade and tenon, all substantially as specified.
LEBEN EDDY.
