Improvement in -KnifejS'h'arp-enersQ NO. 122,597. H Patented Jan.9, |872..
EEIcE ATENT SAMUEL GISSINGER, OF PITTSBURG, PENNSYLVANIA.
` IMPROVEMENT IN KNIFE-SHARPENERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 122,597,dated J annary 9, 1872; antedated December 23, 1871.
To all 'whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, SAMUEL GrssINGEE, of Pittsburg, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful article of manufacture-viz., a Knife- Sharpener; .and I do hereby declare that the following is afull, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
The nature of my new article of manufacture consists in constructing` a knife-Sharpener with the part next to the handle made triangular in form, (when vieWedin cross-section,) and the other portion of it made in the usual form.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my new article of manufacture, I will proceed to describe its constructionand operation.
In the accompanying drawing which forms part of my specification, Figure l is a side View of my new article of manufacture. Fig.
2 is a transverse section of the same at line y of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a transverse section of the same at line y of Fig. 1. l
In the accompanying drawing, A represents the handle, which is constructed of wood or other suitable material, and made in any of the known forms. B G represents the steeL7 That part of it marked B is made triangular in form when viewed in cross-section, and the sharp points D are used for planing off the sides of the knife, so as to form a sharp edge, which is accomplished by placing the part B at right angle to the knife-blade, With a sharp edge, D, resting on the blade of the knife, giving the greatest pressure tothe steel neXt to the cutting-edge of the knife. Then, by forcing the steel backward and forward over the knife-blade, the sharp edge D will plane or cut down that portion of the knifeblade so as to form a sharp cutting-edge, which is then made smooth by the part C of the steel, which part is of the ordinary form, and used in the usual manner.
What I claim as my invention is- A new article of manufacture-viz., a knife- Sharpener, the steel 7 of which is made in the form herein described, and for the purpose set forth.
