Button Shoe or Boot. No. 234,283. Patented Nov. 9,1880.

BUTTON SHOE OR BOOT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 234,283, dated November 9, 1880.
Application filed September 11, 1880.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN HUTTON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Newark, county of Essex, State of New Jersey, have invented new and useful Improvements in Button Shoes or Boots, of which the following is a specification.
- This invention relates to button boots or shoes; and it consists in a button boot or shoe provided with quarters overlapping or meetin gat the front, and with the button-flap formed with a notch between its two outer corners, and with a tapering strap portion extending backward above said recess, the button-flap being adapted to button upon the quarter which it overlaps by a series of buttons below the recess, and the strap portion of the buttonflap being adapted to button upon said quarter in rear of the ankle, as hereinafter described.
This invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l represents a side View. Fig. 2 is a like view, partly in section.
Similar letters indicate corresponding parts.
The letter A designates the vamp, and B the quarters, united in the usual manner. The vamp A is of ordinary character, and the quarters B dpen, as usual, at the front, the edges of such quarters overlapping each other.
The outer edge of the button-flap (l is cut out between the upper and lower outer corners to form a recess or notch, D. In that part of the button-flap 0 above and extending backward from the notch D is formed a 5 single button-hole, 0, while in the part below and extending forward from such notch are formed a series of two or three button-holes, f, the button-piece being left entirely solid opposite to the notch.
The edge G of the quarter which the button-flap overlaps extends forward to the front and the buttons H I are fastened to such quar- 1361'.
(No model.)
By forming the button-flap O with the notch D the same is adapted to be fastened by the buttons H I with perfect safety, the extension G of the under quarter toward the front of the shoe insuring an effective bearing for the overlapping button-piece. The omission of a fastening opposite to the notch D relieves the upper from restraint and allows it to play or bend freely at and over the ankle, which arrangement is obviously favorable to comfort, while the top button, I, is capable of being adjusted by setting it back or forward, thereby changing the dimensions of the upper at the ankle, so as to fit the ankle properly and snugly.
I am aware of the Patent No. 205,435, granted to J. B. Stevens June 25, 1878, and I 6c do not claim the construction of shoes therein shown.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A button boot or shoe provided with quarters B, overlapping or meeting at the front, and with the button-flap 0, formed with anotch or recess, D, between its two outer corners, and with a tapering strap portion extending backward above said recess, the button-flap being adapted to button upon the quarter which it overlaps by a series of buttons below the recess, and the strap portion of the buttonflap being adapted to button upon said quarter in rear of the ankle, thus leaving the recessed portion of the button-flap without fastenin gs, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.-
JOHN HUTTON.
