PATENT SELAH JEFFERS, OF READING, MICHIGAN.
BOOT OR SHOE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 379,471, dated March 13, 1888.
Application filed January 12, 1888. Serial No. 260,561. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, SELAH JEFFERS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Reading, in the county of Hillsdale and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Patterns for Shoe and Boot Uppers; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form apart of this specification.
My invention relates to improvements in shoes; and the objects of my improvements are, first, to manufacture a shoe of superior fit, and one that is less liable to rip than those generally in use, and, second, to provide a pattern for cutting the uppers of said shoe that will economize in leather. I attain these objects by the means illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a view showing the arrangement of the parts composing a shoe. Fig. 2 is a view showing the shape of the rear or heel upper ofa shoe. Fig. 3 is a view showing the shape of the pieces forming the front upper or vamp of a shoe. The dotted lines indicate the line along which the button-fly or tongue of shoe is sewed. Fig. 4C is a view of shoe completed.
The upper of my shoe is formed of the patterns or blanks A and B. Picce A, Fig. 3, has its corresponding piece A, which is similarly shaped in every respect. Hence it will be seen the upper of the shoe is composed of but three pieces.
A designates the pattern or shape of front upper or vamp of shoe, which is secured along the line a to the sole of shoe, in the usual man ner, and sewed to its corresponding piece A along the line a. To either piece of upper A is sewed the button-fly or tongue at. The pieces A respectively, as shown, Fig. 3, are concave along the top and convex along the bottom and rear edges.
B, Fig. 2, represents the pattern or blank of the heel or rear upper. It is sewed to the pieces A of the front upper or vamp along the line b, and secured to the sole in the ordinary manner. As will be seen, the edges of piece B along the line b are cut with a view of being adjusted to the rear edges of upper A.
By cutting and making shoes in the aforedescribed way it economizes in leather and the maker of the shoe is enabled to produce an excellent fit. The seams, in coming where they do, are subjected to little or no strain, thereby avoiding the annoyance (which is so frequent) of the ripping of boots or shoes.
The advantage and utility of the patterns or blanks for shoes or boots, as illustrated and described, are so apparent that it is useless to further enlarge upon its merits.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The shoe herein described, consisting of the vamp portions A A and a and the heel or counter portion B, all united substantially as shown and set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
SELAH JEFFERS.
