P. & J. KELLY.
BALMORAL SHOE UPPER. v
No. 351,778. Patent-ed Nov. 2, 1886.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
PETER AND OSEPH KELLY, OF HAGERSVILLE, ONTARIO, CANADA.
BALMORAL-SHOE UPPER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 351,778, dated Noveinber 2, 1886.
Application filed March 5, 1886.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, PETER KELLY and JosEPH KELLY, both of Hagersville, in the county of Haldimand, in the Province of Ontario, Dominion of Canada, shoe-makers, have jointly invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Balmoral Shoes, to he called or known as Kellys Improved Balmoral Shoe; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction of the same.
The invention relates to a very handy, convenient, and economical manner of forming the uppers of what are known in the trade as Balrnoral shoes, high or low, by which a great saving is' effected in time, labor, and material, and at the same time render such a shoe when completed durable, comfortable, and well-fitting. I
The invention consists in forming the vamp and quarter of one entire piece of leather, cut in the manner and form as shown in the annexed drawings, and bending the vamp and quarter so as they will meet on the inner wearing side of the shoe, and then completed in the ordinary manner.
Figure 1 is a View of the blank for our improved upper. with one side of the vamp folded upon the other side. Fig. 3 shows the vamp and quarter folded-into shape. Fig. 4 is a view of the completedishoe.
The vamp D D and quarter C are out from L an entire piece of leather, as shown at Fig. 1,
having a V-shaped cut inward from the top front end, as shown at B, and from the bottom of the same running diagonally toward the front, a slit or cut, a, and a piececut out of the top rear portion of the quarter, forming the curved line a d, to correspond to the curve 6 f in front when lappedv over upon it. In
Fig. 2 represents the same Serial No. 194.188. (No model.)
the construction of the shoe the first thing to be done after cutting out the upper, as shown, is to stitch a tongue, b, to the upper, as shown by dotted lines, and counter. the heel. The upper part of the vamp D. is then bent over on the line of the slot a and dotted line i '5, when it will present the appearance as seen in Fig. 2. The rear portion, 0, is then bent forward on the dotted line E, and placed under l the edge of the vamp D, as seen in Fig. 3, and the two edges secured together by stitching or rivets. The next step is to place the upper as thus formed of one piece of leather on a last, and complete the shoe by attaching the sole and heel in the ordinary way. The shoe thus formed can be made fine or coarse, and of all sizes, and can be easily made on the same pattern, only altering its size.
What we claim as our invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
As an improved article of manufacture, an upper for Balmoral shoes, cut in one piece in the form shown, with'a V-shaped cut, 13, in 4 Dated at Hamilton, Ontario, this 9th day of February, 1886.
PETER KELLY. JOSEPH KELLY. In presence of JNO. J. Soorr,
