UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EBEN J. BEANE, OF PROVIDENOE, RHODE ISLAND.
SHOE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 223,576, dated January 13, 1880.
Application filed October 24, 1879.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, EBEN J. BEANE, of Providence, in the State of Rhode Island, have made certain new and useful Improvements in Shoes; and I do hereby declare that the following specification, taken in connec; tion with the drawings, making a part of the same, is a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
Figure l is a buttonshoe with my improvements. Fig. 2 is a lace-shoe with same. Fig. 3 is a congress-shoe with same.
Shoes of this class, whether made to button, to lace, or with rubber at the sides, are usually constructed with an upper, A, consisting of a vamp and quarter attached to the sole, and to which is sewed the upper portion or top, B.
The common method of attaching the upper portion or top, B, to the upper A has been to place the edge of the former within the latter, and then sew through both, thus making a seam which cannot fail to come in contact with the foot of the wearer in such a manner as to seriously impair his comfort and oftentimes cut or blister the foot.
In my invention, as shown in Figs. 1, 2, and 3, I make the upper A and attach the same to the sole in the usual manner. I then chamfer the top of the upper A to a thin edge, fold or double it upon the inside, after which I place the top B upon the outside, and stitch the same on, making a beaded or flat seam, as may be desired.
It will now be readily seen that while the appearance'of the shoe will be improved, a smooth surface will be presented to the foot instead of the usual seam, before described.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is p A shoe in which the top is folded or doubled at its lower edge, and secured to the vamp and quarters by stitching it thereto on the outside, as and for the purposes described.
EBEN J. BEANE.
