UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
IVILLIAM A. QUINN, OF CAMBRIDGE, MASSACHUSETTS.
GAITER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 257,066, dated April 25, 1882,
Application filed January 25, 1882. (No model.) i
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WILLIAM A. QUINN, of Cambridge, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gaiters; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being bad to the accompanyingdrawings, which form a part of this specification, and in which- Figure l is a perspective View of my improved cloth gaitcr, and Fig. 2 is a sectional view of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both the figures.
My invention contemplates certain improvements in cloth over-gaiters for boots and shoes, as hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
My improved over-gaiter is of the usual shape and cut, as shown at A, with a row of buttons and a corresponding row of buttonholes on one side and a buckle and strap, 0 and D. Over the front seam a, I stitch on the outside a piece of leather or other material of suitable stift'ness, E, of the shape shown in the drawings-that is to say, it consists of an upper narrow part, which is widened over the instep, as shown at e, from which part the sides are concaved, and then gradually increase in width, so as to form a broad part or shield, E,
over the toe part of the gaiter, havingpointed flaps or side wings, e, on opposite sides of the central seam, a.
The re-enforcing piece-or shield E E may be ornamented by buttons, lacing, or in any other suitable manner to present a neat and attractive appearance, as shown in the drawings, where]? indicates the ornamental lacing, which also answers a mechanical purpose by stifi'enin g the middle part of the re-enforcin g piece, to which it is applied along the line of the front seam. h
The shield E E, of the particular shape herein shown and described, not only prevents the seam from ripping, but by preventing the cloth from turning up it makes a smooth and perfect fitting gaiter.
Having thus described my improvement, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States- A cloth over-gaiter, A, having a leather stay or re-enforcing strip over its front seam, said stay being constructed with the widened or eX- tended toe and instep portion, as herein shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own 1 have hereunto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
WILLIAM AMBROSE QUINN.
