Description

E. N. CURTICE.
MANUFACTURE OF BOTTLES.
Patented Nov. 21,1876.

UNITED STATES EDGAR n. OURTICE, or ROCHESTER, new YORK, ASSIGNOR 'ro HIMSELF,-
PATENT Orr-Ion.
SIMEON Gr. OURTIOE, AND FRANK M. MACK, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN MANUFACTURE OF BOTTLES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 84,593, dated November 21, 1876; application filed October 21, 1676.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDGAR N. (Junction, of Rochester, in the county of Monroe and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful ln'iprovements in the Manufacture of Bottles, of which the following is a specification My invention relates to certain improvements in the construction of bottles for liquors and other materials, and is designed particularly for tomato and other catchnps or condiments, its object being to give the bottle an ornamental exterior surface, which will, at the same time, enable it to be more readily grasped and held by the hand when being used, and also to provide for convenient attachment of the labels to the same, so as not to be injured by the handling of the bottle, or by packing or transportation of the same.
My invention consists in a bottl having ribs or corrugations extending from its bot tom edge to its shoulder, said ribs or corrugations being intercepted at about the center of the bottleby an annular recess encircling the bottle, the said annular-recess being intercepted by one or more circular recesses,
forming seats for a label, as more fully hereinafter set forth.
The drawing represents a view of my improved bottle, which, in the present instance,
side thereof. Said ribs or corrugations, in
the present instance, extend longitudinally or vertically along the bottle, commencing at or near the bottom and shoulder of the bottle, and extending toward the central portion of the same, being separated by an annular recess encircling the bottle, which is intercepted by oneor more intermediate depressed circular recesses, G, having plain faces, for the reception of the label or labels. Said recesses may be united by a belt or band, D, depressed in the glass to the same extent as said recesses, the whole forming a continuous recess around the body of the bottle.
Instead of the vertical or longitudinal ribs, it is evident that spiral ribs or corrugations may be employed and answer the same purpose. The ribs also may, if desired, be extended under the bottom of the bottle, and may extend from the shoulder to the mouth or extremity of the neck, as well as to the band or, label recess at the center, as above described.
The bottle, as thus constructed, will not only have a highly ornamental andcharacteristic appearance, but, by reason of the'corrugated orribbed surface, may be much more readily. and conveniently handled than the bottles, as heretofore constructed, with smooth surfaces. Besides, the label recesses, being below the exterior of the corrugations, will readily receive and hold the labels out of the way of the hand and various obstructions, thus preventing the label from injury by abrasions consequent upon handling or transportation.
The labels may be formed directly upon the glass, but are preferablyprinted upon suitably'shaped sheets of paper or other material,
and attached to the bottle by means of suitable cement. I
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A bottle having ribs or corrugations extending from its bottom edge to its shoulder, said ribs or corrugations being intercepted at about the center of the bottle by an annular recess encircling the bottle, intercepted by one or more circular recesses, forming seats for a label, substantially as herein shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand in the presence.
of the subscribing witnesses.
