To all whom "it may concern:

Be it known that I, WVILLIAM l3. DEGAN, a citizen of the United States and resident of New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sanitary Bottle-Lip Protectors, of which the following is a specification.

The object of the present invention is to produce means for the prevention of an accumulation of dust and disease germs around the mouth or upon the tops of the necks of bottles containing medicines &c. and also to aid in preventing the evaporation or escape of such medicine or other liquid or matter which may be contained in any of said bottles equipped with my present invention.

In the ordinary employment of a bottle for holding a medicine or other matter, a cork (bottle mouth protector) is forced into the mouth or opening in the neck of the bottle to prevent the escape of the contents thereof; as such cork leaves the flange or lip of said bottle mouth exposed to the falling dirt, dust and disease germs which soon form an unsanitary mass which is ultimately washed away (by pouring out a dose of the medicine) and taken into the human system where the said germs may cause a complication of diseases which will end in death.

To eliminate the dangerous and unsanitary conditions above set forth, I have devised a sanitary bottle mouth and lip protector which device is provided with a flange which extends outwardly from the bottle mouth and beyond the outer edge of the lip thereof and preferably downwardly from the upper edge or surface of said lip. To more fully understand my invention, reference is made to the accompanying drawing in Which-- Figure 1 is a diagrammatic side view of the neck and a portion of the body of a bottle and also a sanitary bottle mouth and lip protector. Fig. 2 is a diagrammatic plan view of Fig. 1 when the bottle mouth and lip protector is removed. Fig. 3 is a vertical cross section of the upper part of Fig. 1. Referring now to Fig. 1, the part 2 is the neck of the bottle; 3 is the bottle mouth protector part (or stopper) 4 is the bottle lip protector part.

In Fig. 2 the hole 7 is the mouth of the bottle; 8 is the lip of the bottle; 9 is the upper outer edge of said lip over which the said lip protector part 4 projects and preferably surrounds (as 10, Figs. 1 and 3).

In Figs. 4; and 5, the holes 7 7 (in the bottle lip protector part) are a little larger than hole 7 in Fig. 2. This permits a tapering cork or stopper to be employed as shown in Figs. 1 and 3. The edge of the said hole 7 cuts into the cork (when the latter is forced or twisted into the bottle) and thereby obtains a grip by which the flange or lip-protector and cork are held together. The said lip protector, when in use, preferably rests upon one place, viz, the upper outer edge of said lip, thus preventing any large portion of the surfaces of said lip and said lip protector from coming in contact with each other and sticking together when damp from the contents of the bottle. The said lip protector may be made of card board or any other suitable material; such material is preferably slightly elastic so that if the said stopper should be changed in size (by wear) then it would become necessary to force such stopper farther into said botle; such forcing would automatically cause the hole 7 to adjust itself to fit the said stopper.

There should be enough grip between the hole 7 and the side of said stopper to always enable the stopper to disengage the lip protector from the said lip.

Any suitable means may be employed to hold said stopper and said lip protector together when in use. The lip protector is preferably formed with a dome 11, which extends some distance up the side of the stopper and if so desired the inner edge 12, of said dome or lip protector may be turned downward during the process of manufacture. The said lip protector may be made to lie nearly flat if so desired.

It will be noted that no part of the flange or bottle-lip protector enters the bottlemouth, all parts thereof being maintained outside of the bottle.

Having now described one way in which to carry out my invention, I claim:

1. A device for maintaining a sanitary condition around the mouth and upon the lip of a bottle; said device embracing a bottle mouth stopper, a flange engaging such stopper outside of the bottle mouth only and extending therefrom to a point near the outer edge of said lip; said flange being raised near the said stopper.

2. A device for maintaining a sanitary condition around the mouth and upon the lip of a bottle; said device consisting of a bottle mouth stopper, a flange engaging such stopper outside of the bottle mouth only and extending therefrom to a point near the outer edge of said lip; the said flange being raised near said stopper and the inner edge of said raised part turned downward and inward to out and grip the stopper.

3. A device for maintainmg a sanitary condition around the mouth and upon the lip of a bottle; said device consisting of a bottle mouth stopper; a flange engaging said stopper outside of the bottle mouth only and extending therefrom to a point beyond the outer edge of said lip and then provided with a downward turn; the inner part of said flange being raised near said stopper, the inner edge of said raised part bein' turned downward and inward to cut an grip the stopper.

4. A device for maintaining a sanitary condition around the mouth and on the lip of a bottle; said device embracing a slightly tapering bottle-mouth stopper, a flange in engagement therewith and outside of the bottle-mouth only and extending outwardly and downwardly, from said stopper to a point beyond and below the outer edge of said lip.
