UNITED STATES P EN OFFICE.
THOMAS GREEN, 0F BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT lN SHIRTS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 182,313, dated September 19, 1876; application filed August 26, 1876.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS GREEN, of Brooklyn, county of Kings, State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shirts, of which the followin g is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, making part of this specification, and which represents a front elevation of a-shirt having my improvement applied.
In the ordinary construction of shirts, difficulty has been experienced in effecting the adjustment of the under-garments when the latter became accidentally displaced, it being necessary in such construction, where opeir ing at the back, to remove the collar and loosen the fastening-s of the shirt, in order toafford access to the under-garment; and in shirts opening in front the loosing of the last enings and the adjustment of the under-gen ment through the bosom renders the latter liable to become rumpled and soiled.
The object of my improvement is to remedy this difficulty, and to give increased ventilation to the shirt; and the improvement consists in providing the shirt.,inaddition to the usual opening in front or at the back, for facilitating putting it on and removing it, with a second or additional opening, through which ready access may be had to the undergarment Without disturbing any of the usual fastenings, and which, in connection with the usual opening referred to, affords opportunity for circulation of the air and consequent increased ventilation, as hereinafter explained.
In the accompanying drawing, A represents the body of the shirt, which may be of any usual or preferred construction, and B is the bosom, applied to the body, except in the particular hereinafter described, in any usual manner.
v The opening or slit facilitating the putting on and removal of the garment may be made a readily admit the hand and arm, for the purpose of adjusting the under-garment, or of the shirt itself. The edges of 'the bosom above and below said opening are firmly secured to the body in the usual manner. The opening thus formed, inaddition to the purpose described, performs, also, the office ot' ventilator to'the shirt, greatly increasing the comfort of the wearer.
Having now described my improvement, I would state that I am aware that shirts have been made provided with openings at one side of the bosom,.adapting it to be put on and removed. This I do not claim; but
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- A shirt provided, in addition to the usual openings or slits for facilitating the. putting on and removal of the same, with the opening D at the side of the bosom, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
THOMAS GREEN.
