This invention relates to hats and: more particularly 'to that, type of hat in which;
ing free movement thereof for adjustment and whichshall be inconspicuous.
Further objects will appear from the following description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, which shows a hat embodying this invention. 2
This invention may be applied to any type of hat in which the hat band is adjustable for the purpose of varying the size of the hat or otherwise. As illustrated in the drawing, the same is applied to a summer straw hat having a crown l and a rim 2.
Such hats are ordinarily made of light straw-- and, both the rim and the crown are flexible.
A hat band 3 surrounds the lower portion of thecrown 1 and is provided with a buckle 4 or other device for securing the ends of the band 3 in various adjusted relations; As the crown is flexible, the band ,3 may be drawn up so as to shorten the same, and the crown will thereby be contracted to a smaller size. By lengthening the bandB,
limited range of sizes, each size being capable of adjustment over a considerable range.
Since the band 3 fixes the size of the crown, said band usually fits the crown snugly in its adjusted position and, for the smaller sizes, may be drawn fairly tight.
As the crown 1 is tapered upwardly, there* is a tendency for the band to workitself v way up the taper so that-it leaves-itspost tion at the lower part ofthe crown. 1 When this happens, of course, the lower part of the crown, where it fits the head, is permitted to expand and willno longer have a proper fit. In order to avoid this, means are'provided to retain the band 3' place- .to the r im ,2.
A line of stitchingo may be run'through tically invisible. a
around thelowerportion of the crown next the band 3 and the crown of the hat at the in order to prevent slipping. The remaining portion of the band is not secured to the crown so that it is'permitted movement relatively to the crown 'for'the purpose of adjustment.
At the rear portion of the crown, however, the band is held in place by a strip 6, which is sewed to the crown by a line of stitching 7' or otherwise secured thereto. The strip 6 is secured to the crown vfront so as to secure theband to the crown above the band 3 and extends downwardly I .over the band so as to confine the upperedge thereof and hold the same against slipping upwardly. -At'the same time, the band is free to move longitudinally for adjustment of the size of thehat. The strip 6 is preferably constructed of stiff or semi-rigid material, such as celluloid, which will be flexible, so as to permit fiexure of the crown and which at the same time'is still enoughto hold the band 3 in place. If the strip 6 is made oftransparentcelluloid, it will be nearly invisible at a short distance'and will at least be so inconspicuous that it is not noticed under ordinary circumstances. It Wlll be seen, therefore, that this'invention provides an effective construction fora hat of this type in which the band secured against creeping upwardly on the crown,
while at the same time it is free to move lengthwise for adjustment. tends downwardly over the, upper edge only of the band '3 so asto leave the band free for lengthwise movement .while retaining the same securely against creeping up v v The transparency of the strip 6 enables the band 3 to be seen through it. so
wardly.
The strip 6 ex- 3 that from a short distance the strip is prac- It is obvious that various changes may be made, within the scope of the appended claims,- in the details of construction withof, and a stiff transparent strip secured to the crown above the band and extending downwardly over the band to retain the same in place.
' g2. Ahat having an adjustableband surrounding the lower part of the crown thereof, and a strip of transparent celluloid se cured to the crown andextending over the band to retain the same in place.
3. A hat having an adjustable band surrounding the lower part of the crown there of and fixedly secured thereto at one point,- and a stiff strip secured to the crown and engagement therewith at another point to retain the same in place.
4. A hat having an adjustable band surrounding the lower part of the crown there- 7 of and fixedly secured thereto at one point and a transparent strip securedto the crown and extending over the band at another point'to retain the same in place, said band being slidable relative to said strip.
In testimony whereof I ailix my signature this 14th day of July. 1927.
GLENN E. HOLMES.
