The object of this invention is to provide means for maintainin in good condition-a lining or the like within the crown of a hat, said means comprising a sheet of suitable material lcut in a predetermined manner, and in'accordance with the type of hat to which v .the additional lining or similar article is applied, thisI device being retained by the vsweat band without separate securing devices, and the material being greasefproof and-preventing the soiling o the lining in the manner frequently experienced. Y
A further object 1s to provide `a lining or the like of `one of the commercial types of thin, tough and transparent paper, so that the original linin if of ornamental character will still be visible.
A further object -is Ito provide a lining which shall include a central portion or wall 2 to roughly meet the needsof many types of hats, the lining including also side or wing members the lower ed e portions of which are adapted for reception within the sweat band whereby the inner lining will be held in position for the practical or orna-4 mental purposes desired.
In the drawings: A
Figure 1 is a view invvertical section, showing a hat of, commercial type, and showing in position therein, in dotted line, the protective device herein described, the usual lining 'for the hat, when employed, being adj acentto the crown and within the structure shown in dotted lines. v l Figure 2'is a blank form from which the device is produced.
The crown of the lhat is designated 10, the brim isshown conventionally, and the usual 4o lining 12 is the special portion of the article lng 4from treatment of the hair, or `from perspiration alone.
.The protective device comprises-a central portion 14 slotted as shown at 14v and 14, and this'centra'l opposite the adjacent portion of the wings referred to below. Each protective device includes laterally and downwardly extending members such as are shown especially in Figure 2 and desto be protected from`foreign material, arisportion is cut away at 157 ignatd 16 and 17. These devices are preferably cutaway at 17', along curved or other lines, and the portions 17', are opposite cut away portionsv 15, so that reentering open portions are vprovided in the article consid ered as a whole, and it is more readil possi ble to make the device conform portions of the hat. y
It is not intended to employ'securing devices, for the reason that the edges 16 and 17 of the wings will be received between the sweat band 18, and the lining 12, and the material will be suiciently stiff to maintain correct position, and may even be made stiff enough to assist in the shaping of the hat, or in the maintenance of the shape during use; in vmany instances, one of the commercial types of glassine or cellophane papers will serve the purpose.
What I clalm is: 7 .The combination with a soft hat including a depressed crown, a lining and a sweat band, of :itself shaping linmg-protective member co-eXtensive at the sides with the lining, and comprising a central portion slotted to permit of conformation with and engagef ment of the linin adjacent to the depressed middle portion oil the crown, saidy protective member including also wing members connected with the central portion and cut away to formopen portions, the edges adjacent the open portions being positioned to underlie spaced elevated portions of the creased soft hat when the outer edges of the wings are to t e pro-p.
positioned within the sweat band ofthe hat. C5 f Intestimonyv whereof Iaix my si ature.
