UNITED STATES WELLINGTON I. CLEMENTS, OI? NORFOLK, VIRGINIA.
SAILOBS REVERSIBLE. WATERI'ROOF FLAT CA1.
Application filed October 1, 1926. Serial No. 138,890.
This invention relates to and has for one of its objects to provide a sailors flat cap with a lining which, when the cap is reversed or turned inside out, will fully protest it from the rain and which when disposed outermost will not detract from the appearance of the cap. a
A further object of the invention is to provide a cap of this character which when reversed will provide a waterproof shield for the back of the head and neck.
With the foregoing and other objects in View, the nature of which will become apparent as the description proceeds, the in- 16 vention consists of the novel construction,
combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Figure 1 is a sectional view taken on a plane extendingv vertically and centrally through a sailors flat cap embodying my invention,
Figure 2 is a bottom plan view of the cap,
Figure 3 is a view similar to Figure 1 of the cap reversed,
Figure his a sectional view taken on a plane extending centrally and vertlcally through a slightly modified form of the cap,
Figure 5 is a similar view of the modified form of the cap reversed, and
Figure 6 is a view similar to Figure 5 of a further modified form of the cap.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description, and designated in the several views of the accompanying drawings, by similar reference characters.
In the drawings, '1 designates the crown,
2 the headband, 3 the grommet, ithe sweat band, 5 the inner ornamental flap, and6 the ribbon of a sailors flat cap. The flap 5 is of annular formation, is split as shown at 7 and is secured at its outer edge or periphery as shown at 8 to the headband 2 adjacent the upper end of the latter. Normally the flap 5 occupies the substantially horizontal position shown in Figure 1 and the distance between its inner and outer peripheries is to greater than the vertical dimension of the head band 2.
in accordance with my invention, the circular top 1 of the crown 1 is provided with a circular lining 9 of water-proof material, the annular bottom 1 of the crown is provided with an annular lining 10 of water-proof material, and the flap 5 is provided at its top side with an annular lining 11 of water-proof material. The periphery of the lining 9 and the outer periphery of the lining 10 are connected to the pe riphery of the crown 1, as shown at 12, and the inner periphery of the lining 10 and the outer periphery of the lining 11 are connected at the upper end of the headband 2 as shown at 13. The linings 9, 10 and 11 are adapted when the cap is reversed to fully protect it from the rain. lVhen the cap is in this or its reversed condition, the lining 9 extends across the outer side of the top 1 of the crown 1, the lining 10 extends across the outer side of the bottom l of the crown, and the adjacent and united portions of these linings extend over the periphery of the crown. Also, when the cap is in this condition, the fla 5 extends downwardly over thesweat and 4,
which is usually made of fine material, and
the lining 11. is located at the outer side of the flap. The flap 5 and lining 11 extend below the lower edge of the headband 2, and in view thereof the sweat band 4 is fully protected from the rain To reverse the cap, it is only necessary to first remove the grommet 3, and after the cap has been reversed, the grommet is replaced in the crown 1.
As shown in Figures 4- and, 5, the crown 1 may be provided with but one liningaof water-proof materialwhich is designated 9" and extends over the top and edge of the crown. In these figures, it is also shown that the water-proof lining 11 for the flap 5? may be extended to provide, when the cap is reversed, a shield 14: for the back of the head and neck. The front edges 15 of the shield 14: are of arcuate formation so as to prevent the shield from covering the ears and thus interfering with the hearing of the sailor. The shield 14: is adapted to be secured tightly about the neck by straps 16. In order that it may present a neat appearance when folded within the cap as in Fig ure 4, the shield 14 is provided with a lining 17 which may be made separately from or integrally with the flap 5.
As shown in Figure 6, the flap and shield may be made separately and detachably connccted together. In this figure 5 designates the flap, l1 the water-proof lining for the flap, and 14 the shield. The shield 14 is detachably connected to the flap 5 by any suitable elements such as the stud and socket fasteningsv 18, This shield is also provided with a lining 17 so that it will when folded within the cap present a neat and attractive appearance.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing it should be apparent that I have provided a sailors fiat cap which when reversed will fully protect the crown and sweat band from therain. Furthermore, the cap will when reversed, provide a shield adapted to fully protect the back of the heat andneck from the rain. 7 It should be understood that the drawings are merely illustrativeand do not pretend to give 'exact proportions. 'Furthermore, the said drawings are illustrative of a preferred construction, it being my expectation that various changes and modifications may be made without departing from thespirit and scope of my invention.
