HAT rnornoron;
Application filed September 3. 1926. Serial No. 183,239,
The main object of thisinvention is 'to provide a hat protector suitable for protecting wearers during inclement, stormy and rainy weather. For this object, the provision of an entire covering for the crown and the brim of a hat and means on said protector for the draining the rain dripping upon the surface of the covering rearwardly so that the water will fall from the edge of the brim at the rim of the hat, is made- Another objectis to provide a hat pro tector covering the crown and brim of the hat provided with a ridge extending par-,
tia'lly around the circumferential edge of the hat which'guides the rain falling upon the brim covering rearwardly so that it falls from the rear edge of the hat, and does not interfere with the vision of thewearer.
The above and other objects will become apparent in the description below, in which characters 10f reference refer to like-named. parts in the drawing. i 1 Referring briefly to the drawing, Figure 1 is a perspective view of the hat protector.
Figure 2 is a top plan view of the same.
Figure 3 is a sectional'elevational view taken on line3-3 of Figure 2.
Referring in detail to the drawing, the.
numeral 10 indicates the roof of the crown which surmounts the crown. wall 11 of the hat. This roof and wall constitute the crown of the hat and the latter is encircled bv a relatively wide brim 12 and the outline described and illustrated in Figure 3 is of the well known stiffstraw'hat which when subjected to the rain or storm, or the him,
would lose its shape and become unwearable. e v
To guard against the elements, a hat protector is provided which comprises the flat oval shaped piece of flexible material 13, which is joined to the roof. This marginal edge is joined to an encircling wall 1&1, which extends downwardly and covers the crown wall 11, of the. straw hat. I
The encircling plate 15 formed of the same material as the hat protector, covers the upper surface of the brim 12 of the hat and has extending therefrom a lip. 16 which projects in a plane parallel to the plate 15 immediately beneath it.j The forward portion of the plate 15 is provided with a tapering rib 17 which extends approximately three quarters around the plate. Additional tail ribs 18 extend from the extremities of the main encircling ribs 17 and project to 'thru the space between the rail ribs. hat is divided into two sectors and the forward the central portion of the surface of the plate 15. This rib 1S triangular inshape,
and has a sloping surface 19 inclined toward 7 the center of the hat protector. Tlie platc 15 is provided with the radialribs 20 and 21.;
which extend from the encircling rib 17 toward the center of the .hat. These radial ribs 20 and 21 extend over the greater portion of the width of the plate 15, and beyond the extremities of these radial ribs, the channels 22 are formed thru which any rain which drops upon the surface 5 in thesec- Hats of this variety are usually worn in an inclined position tilted rearwardly with the rear portion of the hat in the lowest plane. As rain begins to fall upon the hat and upon 7 the inclined surface 19 of the ribs 17, it
begins gradually to circulaterearwardly and is deflected by the radial ribs 18 toward the longitudinalaxis of the hat at the rear, and
The
ribs 20 and 21 deflectthis rain toward the channels 22, from the front tother-ear of the hat-and eventually passes thru the passages totrickle from the edge. 7
It is to be noted that certain changes in form and construction may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention.
I claim t 1. A hat protectorcomprising a roof member and an encircling wall joined to the marginaledge'of said roof member for covering the crown of the hat, an encircling plate joined to the encircling wall, said plate and roof member being parallel, an encircling rib mounted on the upper surface of said plate covering the brim of the hat, said encircling rib bounding approximately three quarters of the forward edge of the hat symthe hat in a rearward direction.
the crown of the hat, an encircling plate joined to the encircling wall, said plate and root member being parallel, an encircling rib mounted on the upper surface of said plate covering the hum of the hat, said cncircling rib bounding approximately three quarters of the 't'orwa rd edge of the hat syinmetrically onboth sides, tail ribs extei'iding from the extreinlty of said encircling rib it toward the center of the width of thehat in a rearward direction, said encircling and tail ribs having inclined surfaces extending toward the axis of said hat protector, the ra dial ribs extending part1 across the Width of r the plate member dividing said plate member into sectors, said rib members forming a deflecting elementrfor guiding the rain toward the encircling wall of the hat protector, and channels between the ends of the radial ribs and snrlai-e of the encircling wall il'orming passage 'lorthe circulation of rain from one sector to another. a
In testimony whereof atlix my signa tare. i I FHARLES F. ll-EUIJIEKE.
