Abstract
385,559. Hats &c. MINE SAFETY APPLIANCES CO., Braddock Street, Pittsburg, U.S.A.-(Assignees of Punton, C. W. ; 524, East End Avenue, Pittsburg, U.S.A.) Aug. 3, 1932, No. 21805. Convention date, Aug. 18, 1931. [Class 63.] A cap, especially for miners' wear, has integral rigid crown and visor portions formed of hard nonconducting moulded plastic material, and an ear protective and strengthening bead. Preferably, the plastic material is a phenol-formaldehyde condensation product mixed with chopped duck cloth. It may be reinforced at the top of the crown with wire mesh and at the sides with duck, or a duck blank may be radially slit around the edge to allow overlapping, and used to reinforce the whole. The wire mesh may have a paper layer on each side. The bead may surround the whole edge, and have a strengthening insertion 3a of hemp rope. A cloth sweat-band 7 may be carried by pads 7a spaced to allow ventilation, the band being gripped between the crown and pads which pads are secured by a lace 9. A lamp holder 18 is mounted on a stout leather strap riveted to the front of the crown and the visor. In a modification, the lamp holder is built up on a block integral with the helmet. Rivets on the crown may be insulated.
