WITNESSES ATTORNEY HENRY HOWE, OF COUNCIL BLUFFS, IOWA.
IMPROVEMENT IN TRUSSES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 161.233, dated March 23, 1875; application filed February 18, 1875.
To all whom it may concern Be it known thatI, HENRY HOWE, of Council Bluffs, in the county of Pottawattamie and in the State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Trusses; and do hereby declare that the following is afull, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon,
making a part of this specification.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a truss, in which awaist-belt is provided with an interior plate, and a band secures thereto a socket, within which is a spring, and upon which springs rests a pad or compress, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which- Figure l is a perspective view of my truss. Fig. 2 is a section through the pad and Fig. 3 is a section, showing the application of my invention to infant trusses.
A represents the waist-belt, made of any suitable material, and provided at the front with a metallic plate, B, inserted in, and covered by, the belt. This plate is intended to extend from a point beyond where the pad is applied around the hip, and fit properly, and it is forthe purpose ofpreventing the pad from tipping over, either up or down, but hold the same in proper position. 0 represents a socket, made of any desired dimensions, of metal, rubber, or other suitable material, and held to that part of the belt where the metal plate B is, by a band, E, passing around the belt, as shown. D represents the pad or compress, made of wood or other suitable material, and inserted in the socket 0, With a spring, G, inserted therein, and the pad pressed outward by said spring. The pad is held from coming out by means of pins a. passing through slots 1) in the socket, as shown in Fig. 2.
This pad, covering but little space, gives pressure only on the part that requires pressure, and the abdomen will not interfere with it so as to cause displacement in any way.
The pad also presses in deep, lessening all liability of soreness of the parts. It may be adjusted to either right or left side, as required.
In infant trusses I dispense with the spring Grand compress D, and substitute a rubber compress, H, as shown in Fig. 3.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination of the waist-belt A, interior plate B, socket'O, with band E, compress D, and a spring, G, substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 6th day of February, 1875.
HENRY HOWE.
