MATTRESS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Bec. 26, 19a@ Application filed April 14, 1915. Serial No. 21,384.
To all ywhom t may concern:
Be it known that we, ELAM L. TRUMAN and MARTHA H. TRUMAN, citizens of the United States, residing at Spring Valley, in the county of Greene and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Imprcvements in Mattresses; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others vskilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and iigures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in mattresses, couches, etc., and the object in view is to produce a device of this nature especially adapted to relieve the pressure coming upon the body at such location as would tend to hinder the free circulation of blood through main arteries and veins adjacent to the spinal column.
rlhe invention consists essentially in the provision of a mattress so constructed as to form a recess, the edges of which have ribbed seams and which would naturally come adjacent to the spinal column when a person is lying upon the couch.
Our invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure l is a top plan view. Fig. 2 is a cross sectional view. Fig. 3 is an edge view.
Reference now being had to the details of the drawings by letter, A designates a mattress which may be of any approved construction and has an integral pillow B at one end. Said mattress is provided with an elongated recess, designated' by letter D, which extends nearly through the mattress and the opposite sides of the recess which iiare outwardly are fastened to the mattress bv ribbed seams, thus leaving a space which will relieve the spine of pressure when a person is lying4 thereon and as a consequence relieving the arteries and veins through which blood circulates adjacent to the spinal column.
As will be seen in Fig. 2, the pocket is disposed substantially centrally of the width of the mattress and extends from a point adjacent one end thereof and entirely through the filling of the mattress, the inner end of the pocket being fastened to the lower side of the mattress tiel; and the edges of the upper side of the mattress tick adjacent the pocket are turned into rolls and secured to the upper edges of the walls of the pocket, the said walls fla-ring outwardly toward their upper edges.
While we have shown our invention as applied to a mattress, it will be understood that it may be utilized in connection with upholstery of various kinds in either chairs or couches without in any way departing from the spirit of the invention.
What we claim to be new is A mattress having a longitudinal pocket near one end formed centrally of the width of the mattress and extending from a point adjacent one end of the mattress partially the length of the mattress and entirely through the iilling of the mattress, the inner end of the pocket being fastened to the lower side of the mattress tick and the edges of the upper side of the mattress tick adjacent the pocket being turned into rolls and secured to the upper edges of the walls of the pocket, the said walls flaring outward toward their upper edges, the said pocket serving to relieve pressure and permit free circulation of blood through the main arteries and veins adjacent the spinal column for the purpose described.
In testimony whereof we hereunto ax our signatures in presence of tw'o witnesses.
