S. A. SHEPHERD. MATTRESSES.
No. 195,850. Patented ot.z,1s77
N- PETERS, PHOTO-HTMDGRAFNER, WASHJNOTUN. D

SARAH A. SHEPHERD, OF WASHINGTON, DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN MATTRESSES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 195,850, dated October 2, 1877; application filed May 22, 1877.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SARAH A. SHEPHERD,
' of the city and county of Washington and District of Columbia, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Mattresses, of which the following is a specification:
The object of this invention is to make a mattress so that it will be more convenient for packing or handling than those madein the ordinary way. It consists in making the mattress in sections, the sections being connected by overlapping flaps and buttons.
In the annexed drawing, making part of this specification, Figure 1 is a perspective view of the mattress. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of one of the sections.
The same letters are employed in both figures in the indication of identical parts.
The matness isformed of four sections, A, B, G, and D representing the sections. On the two sides of each section, which, when the sections are laid together, come in opposition to the other sections, double flaps are placed. The under flap: E E has button-holes worked in it corresponding to the buttons F, which are sewed on the edges of the adjoining sections, by whichthe sections are connected.
Jlhe upper flap G G serves as a covering for the buttons. also made with double flaps E G, so that the sections may be connected on the lower side as well as on the upper.
On the two ends of the mattress handles H H are placed, to assist in turning and moving it.
I am aware that mattresses have heretofore been made in two or more sections, and do not claim this feature; but
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- A mattress made in sections, having double flaps on the upper and lower edges of the adjoining sides of the sections, one flap having button-holes for connecting the sections by means of buttons on the mattress, and the outer one for covering the buttons, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
SARAH A. SHEPHERD.
Witnesses:
