UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
BENJAMIN M. GIBSON, OF MQNMOUTH, ILLINOIS.
IMPROVEMENT IN SHOES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 203,439,
April 8,
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, BENJAMIN M. GIB- SON, of Monmouth, in the county of Warren, and in the State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shoes; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.
The nature of my invention consists in a shoe having its quarters cut with flaps, which are separated from the quarter for a suitable distance from the top downward, leaving a portion united, and the two quarters then sewed together, with the lower parts of the flaps overlapping eachother, and the upper parts of said flaps united together and to the opposite quarters, all as hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of a shoe embodying my invention. Fig. 2 shows the patterns of the quarters; Fig. 3, side View of A A represent the two quarters of a shoe, which are cut at the back, each with-a flap, B, as shown. This flap is then separated from the quarter by cutting down from the upper [New a y dated May 7, 1878 application filed 1878.
edge, from a to a point, b, leaving the flap united to the quarter from the point 11 down to the lower end of the flap at d.
In uniting the two quarters, the flaps B B overlap each other from b to 01, while below d the two quarters are sewed together, and above b the inner edges of the two flaps are sewed together, while the outer edge of each flap is sewed to the opposite quarter. Thus, from b to d the shoe is double and without any seam, making the shoe strong and durable just at the point above the counter, Where it most generally breaks first.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A shoe having its quarters A A each cut with a flap, B, which is separated from the quarter by a slit from a to b, and leaving it united to the quarter from I; to d, and the two quarters then sewed together, with the lower portions of the flaps overlapping each other, and the upper portions united together and to the opposite quarters, substantially in the manner and for the purposes herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 11th day of March, 1878.
BENJ. M. GIBSON.
