Description

G.'HERON Shoes.
No. 209,682. Patented 'Nov. 5', 1878.
WiTN ESSES fl ATTORNEYS N. PETERS, FHOTO IJTHOGRAFNER, WASHINGTON. DV 0.
UNITED STATES PATENT FFIGE.
CHRISTOPHER HERON, OF GALENA, ILLINOIS.
IMPROVEMENT IN SHOES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 209,682, dated November 5, 1878 application filed July 25, 1878.
To all whom it may concern;
Be it known that I, CHRISTOPHER HERON, of Galena, in the county of J o Daviess, and in the State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shoes; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.
. The nature of my invention consists in cutting a shoe-upper in such a manner that it leaves the quarter and flap for button-holes in one piece, and then simply cuttingtransversely through said flap and inserting a gusset, as will be hereinafter. more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of a shoe-upper embodying my invention. Fig. 2 shows the pattern for the same. Fig. 3 shows a side-lace pattern embodying the same invention.
A represents the shoe-upper cut from or by a pattern in such a manner that the quarter and the flap B for the button-holes are in one piece. The flap is then cut across the instep at a, and a gusset, O, fitted therein. It will be noticed that at the inner end of the slit a there is a triangular piece taken out, as shown at b, and the gusset O'is cut to fit in the same. By doingthis I am enabled to get just such a crimp or curve as may be desired, while with the incision, Without the piece taken out, the crimp is too acute or sharp.
The ordinary method is to stitch on a flap of a separate piece. By my improvement it same time, causing the upper to assume the proper shape or crimp to conform to the shape of the foot. J
I am aware that it is not new to cut the lapquarter with a portion of the lap in the same I piece, and then inserting a felling-piece of such form as to complete the lap, and I do not claim such as my invention. 7
In my invention the entire lap is cut inone piece with the quarter, a gap made in the lap, and a gusset inserted, as above stated, obviating anyseam whatever along any portion of the front of the shoe, and, at the same time,
shaping the front to the proper curve without crimping.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In a button-shoe, the quarter A B, out in one piece, having the opening a 1) across the instep, and the gusset O inserted, all substantially as shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand and seal this 5th day of July, 18.78.
