J. P. EATON. PATTERN FOR SHOES.
No. 460,569. Patnted Oct. 6, 1 891.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFF CE.
JOSHUA Pi EATON, OF \VOBURN, MASSACHUSETTS.
PATTERN FOR SHOES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 460,569, dated October 6, 1891. Application filedJ'une 29,1891. Serial No- 397,818- (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSHUA P. EATON, of \Voburn, county of Middlesex, State of Massachusett's, have invented an Improvement in Patterns for Shoes, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like letters on the drawings representing like parts.
United States Patent N 0. 308,345, dated November 25, 1884, granted to S. O. Orowe, shows a pattern for a shoe, consisting of a single piece of material cut in a peculiar form, whereby one seam only is required contiguous to the shank. In cutting this pattern in practice it has been found that the upper end of the back quarter to which the heel-strap is attached is much too narrow, and so also the upper end of the front quarter. An attempt was made to Widen the upper end of the front quarter by cutting oif the narrow tapering end portion; but while this gives the desired width it leaves the front top too short; also, when making up the shoe the seam at the shank is in line with one of the side edges of the gore, which is a very unsightly and objectionable place.
This invention has for its object to overcome the aforesaid objections; and it consists in a pattern for an upper, comprising in a single piece a vamp having at one side of it a portion of the inside quarter and on the opposite side the complete outside quarter, and between them a wide front top, and,as a continuation of the complete quarter,'having the remaining portion of the inside quarter, and between and above the complete quarter and the last-named portion of the inside quarter a wide back top, the whole being adapted to be folded and crimped on a line extending from the tip of the toe to the middle of the front top and also on a line extending from the middle of the back top down to the lower edge of the quarter. I
Figure 1 shows in plan view the pattern as it is cut out; Fig. 2, a view showing the pattern folded or crimped at the middle line of the vamp and middle line of the back top and quarter, and Fig. 3 the completed crimped upper.
The pattern comprises in a single piece the vamp or toe part a, having at one side of it a portion, as b, of the inside shank or quarter piece and at the opposite side the complete outside shank or quarter piece 0, and also, as a continuation thereof, the remaining portion d of the inside shank or quarter. The side edges of the portions b' and d when brought together form a seam at the inside shank of the shoe on a line midway the length of the gore instead of at one side thereof, as best shown in Fig. 3. The front top e, having its end of the desired width, is also formed integral with the vamp and quarter pieces, it being also of the desired length, and the back top fot the desired length and width at the upper end is also formed integral with the vamp and quarter pieces just above the portions of the quarter 0 and e.
The vamp a and front top I), when folded on the line g, and the back top fiwhen folded on the line It, represent the upper, as shown in Fig. 2, and in condition to be finally crimped, and in Fig. 3 said upper is represented as finally crimped.
It will be seen that the pattern is laid with a view to obtaining proper width, length, and fullness for all parts, and, as shown, possesses these features when crimped.
I claim Y The pattern for an upper, comprising in a single piece the vamp a, having on one side of it a portion 2) of the inside shank or quarter and on the opposite side the complete outside shank or quarter 0, and between them a wide and full length front top e, and, in con-- tinuation of the quarter 0, having a portion 61 of the inside quarter, and bet-ween and above the portions 0 and 01 having a wide back top fof,a length corresponding with the length of the front top, the whole adapted to be folded or crimped on the lines 9 and h, as shown, all as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
- JOSHUA P. EATON. Witnesses:
BERNIOE J. NoYEs, EMMA J. BENNETT.
