UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.A
DAVID J. ONEILL, OF COUNCIL BLUFFS, IOIVA.
SHOEs SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 366,503, dated July 12, i 887.
(No model.)
T 0 all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, DAVID J. ONEILL, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Council Bluffs, in the county of Pottawattamie and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shoes, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention pertains to certain new and useful improvements in shoes; and it consists in the detailed construction, combination, and arrangement of the parts, substantially as hereinafter fully set forth, and particularlypointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure lis a plan viewof myinventiomwith the upperportion of the shoe removed. Fig. 2 is a crosssectional viewthercot. Fig. 3 is a view of the sock worn in connection with my invention, and Fig. li is a View ofthe last.
The object of this invention is to provide a shoehaving means for retaining` the big toe of a persons foot apart from the other toes and 1n a proper natural position, and also to provide a sock to be worn in connection with my improved shoe.
In carrying out my invention I provide a shoe, A, in the forward end of the sole of which is formed a narrow slit, wherein I secure a strip or partition, a, preferably of heavy sole-leather, the same being retained by stitches passing therethrough and through the insole.
In constructing my shoe I employ a last, B, which has a slot or aperture, b, therein for entrance of the strip orpartition a in the formation of the shoe. After securing the strip or partition c in position I place a toe-piece or bridge, b, over the upper end thereof, which at its ends is secured to the sole of the shoe, as shown. The strip or partition can be additionally secured or held in position by stitching the same to the toe-piece or bridge b'.I
In Fig. 3 I have shown the form of sock or stocking worn in connection with my invention, which consists in providing the sock O with a lnitteirlike'end, G, having a separate compartment, c, for the big toe ofthe wearer, thus providing a comfortable 'fitting sock and shoe for the wearer and effecting the separation of the big toe from the others for the purpose of curing the enlargement of the joint of the foot caused by bunions, corns, &c.
I am aware that it is not new to secure to the inner side of the front part of the sole a wedgeshaped ridge or partition, and hence I do not make broad claim thereto.
I claim as my inventionl. The herei n-described shoe, comprising the sole having a slit or aperture therein, and the stri p or partition secured in said aperture, substantially as shown, and for the purpose described. y
2. rIhe combination, with the shoe, and the sole having a slit or aperture therein, of the strip or partition secured in said aperture, and the toe-piece or bridge, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony whereofIallx my signature in presence of two witnesses.
DAVID J. ONEILL.
