UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE B. SIEGENTHALER,,OF WOOSTER, OHIO.
' BOOT-STRAP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 251,647, datedvDecember 27, 1881. Application filed November 4, 1881. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 'I, GEORGE B. SIEGEN' THALER, of Wooster, in the county of Wayne and State of Ohio, have invented a new and Improved Boot-Strap and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which Figure 1 is an elevation of my impro ved boot-strap secured to the leg of a boot. I Fig. 2 is a bottom view of the boot-strap. Fig.3 is a top view of the same; and Fig. 4 is a sectional view in the line as m, Fig. 1.
My invention relates to improvements in boot-straps for leather boots; and it consists in the peculiar construction and arrangement of the parts, as hereinafter more fully set forth. a
In the accompanying drawings, a represents a strip of leather, the longitudinal edges of which are folded on its body from each side and the folds and body sewed together by a central line of longitudinal stitches, b, extending ashort distance on each side of the middle of the strip a, to form that part of the bootstrap through which the fingers are inserted Slits o are then made in the ends of the body of the strapfi om near the ends of the line of stitches b, and in line therewith, to the ends of the strap, thus forming two projecting tongues, (Z d, at each end of the boot-strap a, the planes of which are at right angles to the flat middle part of the bootstrap.'
The boot-strap a maybe secured to the boot by cutting two slits, e, in line with each other near the upper ed go of the leather boot-leg and inserting the outer tongues, d, through the slits e from theoutside, the tongues straddling the boot-leg and lying in contact with each other on the inside of the bootleg, to
which they are sewed and to each other by a single line of vertical stitches, h.
The tongues b of the boot-strap may also be secured tothe inside of boot-leg by placing the tongues of each pair in eontact with each By this construction of bootstrap it will be seen that a stiff arched leather standing loop or strap formed of a single piece of leather is obtained, always open for the insertion of-the fingers when it is desired to draw on a boot;
that the strap is much stronger than in the ordinary construction and not so liable to break, and that the plane of the tongues is at right angles to the flat arched part of the boot-strap, by which construction the strap can be more readily sewed to the boot-leg and a better hold can be had on the arched part of the bootstrap, as more fingers of the hand can beinserted in the loop than in the usual construe tion, The boot-strap is also more securely attached to the boot-leg than in the ordinary construction, as there are two tongues on each end of the bootstrap sewed to the boot-leg.
What I claim as my invention is 1. As an improved article of manufacture,
a boot-strap, a, consisting of a strip ot'leather having its central portion folded to form three thicknesses and its folds suitably secured in place, and provided with the end slits, 0 forming two tongues, d, at each end of the bootstrap, the planes ot which are at right angles to the flat middle portion of thestrap, as set forth.
2. The combination, with a boot provided with the slits ee in its leg, of the boot-strap a, constructed as set forth, and secured to the boot-leg by the vertical rows of stitches It passing through the tongues and boot-leg, substantially as described, and for the purpose set forth.
