Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct: 20, 1908.
Application filed February 18, 1968. Serial No. 416,491.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDMOND J. LAFOND, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bristol, in the county of Grafton and State of New Hampshire, have invented new and useful Improvements in Shoes, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to shoes, and the object of the invention is to provide a shoe so constructed as to readily adapt itself to the instep of the wearer.
With this object in view the invention resides in the novel construction of shoes provided with slits upon each side of the instep and having eyelets adapted for the reception of lacing cords by which the shoe may be readily adjusted upon the instep of the wearer.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of a shoe constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the lacing cords applied. Fig. 3 is a sectional view upon the line 33 of Fig. 2.
In the drawings the numeral 1 designates the vamp of my improved shoe, 2 the quarter and 3 the tongue thereof. The quarter 2 of the shoe is provided with V-shaped slits 4, upon each side of the instep, thus leaving a central portion or wall 5. These slits 4 terminate adjacent the vamp of the shoe, and are provided with a reinforcement 6, constructed of a single piece of suitable material and stitched to the edges provided by the V-shaped slits. The reinforcement 6 may be extended rearwardly of the shoe as at 7, to provide an additional support between the vamp and quarter of the shoe. The reinforcements and portions of the shoe engaged by the reinforcements are provided with suitable orifices arranged upon each side of the slit portions 4 and disposed in pairs. These perforations are adapted for the reception of suitable eyelets 8, adapted for the reception of the lacing cords 9.
From the above description it will be readily seen that with a shoe constructed in accordance with my invention, the shoe will readily adapt itself to the instep of the wearer, and that providing the cut away portions with reinforcements, danger of the leather tearing when the laces are drawn is effectively overcome.
Having thus fully described the invention what is claimed as new is:
A shoe having its quarter provided with V-shaped slits upon each side of the front of the quarter, reinforcing members for the edges provided by the V-shaped slits and extendlng rearwardly and secured to the vamp and quarter, eyelets for the reinforcements and edges provided by the V-shaped slits, and a tongue secured to the vamp and adapted to cover the spaces provided by the slits.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
. EDMOND J. LAFOND.
