Description
(ModeL)? L. J. ASHBURN.
, -MANUFAGTURE OF 8110118.; No. 251,670.- Patented Dec. 27,1881.
N. PETERS, Fhatu-Lilhognpher. Washington D. C.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LINZY ASHBURN, OF DOBSON, NORTH CAROLINA.
MANUFACTURE OF SHOES.
SPECIFICATION forming" part of Letters Patent No. 251,670,da.ted December 27, 1881.
Application filed May 31, test. (Model) To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, L.\J. ASHBURN, of Dobson, in the county of Sorry and State of North Carolina, have invented certain new and use ful Improvements in the Manufacture of Shoes; and I do hereby declare that the following is a a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanyingdrawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a-partot' this specilieation.
This invention consists in an improvement in cutting complete uppers for shoes out of one piece of material.
Figurel is a plan view of the pattern; Figs. 2 and 3, the same when folded.
It will be seen by the figures that by my pattern the whole upper is out of one piece of material, thus saving much time. After the pattern is cut it is folded, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3, so that the line a b a, Fig. 1, adjusts itself with the line represented by the dotted line from 6 to e, and when folded is stitched along this line, requiring but one seam along and with the cut to make a complete upper. Again, by the pattern it will be seen that it gives strength where most needed, forming a double and stiff counter. By this pattern no crimp ing is required, as the upper is already in the proper shape, and when folded with the dotted lines .70 m a" x and c c as shown in Fi 1, the seam a b a has only to be stitched and the upper is ready for the last.
If the shoe needs lining, the vamp-lining can be cutat the same time as the upper, and only requires a small amount of additional stitchlog.
"I am aware that a shoe-upper of one piece, requiring no crimping and tortniug a double upper, has been made, and I do not claim the same, broadly; but i What I do claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A pattern for the upper of a shoe, cut in one piece of material, requiring no crimping, and forming a double counter, having the reversed curved cuts a. b cand b d, the curved cut at e, and the straight out ef, substantially as shown and described.
